Product Description

Justine knows she's going to die. Any second now.

Justine Jones has a secret. A hardcore hypochondriac, she's convinced a blood vessel is about to burst in her brain. Then, out of the blue, a startlingly handsome man named Packard peers into Justine's soul and invites her to join his private crime-fighting team. It's a once-in-a-lifetime deal.

With a little of Packard's hands-on training, Justine can weaponize her neurosis, turning it outward on Midcity's worst criminals, and finally get the freedom from fear she's always craved. End of problem. Or is it?

In Midcity, a dashing police chief is fighting a unique breed of outlaw with more than human powers. And while Justine's first missions, including one against a nymphomaniac husband-killer, are thrilling successes, there is more to Packard than meets the eye. Soon, while battling her attraction to two very different men, Justine is plunging deeper into a world of wizardry, eroticism, and cosmic secrets. With Packard's help, Justine has freed herself from her madness - only to discover a reality more frightening than anyone's worst fears.

This is the first book in a trilogy by urban fantasist Carolyn Crane.

Justine thinks she knows she is going to die at any minute, her mother died, after having had a neurosis of 'Vein Star Syndrome' then actually died from it by bleeding out in her brain. Justine often gets a sensation of prickles, a suspicious twinge, followed by stark & utter fear coupled with the complete conviction she is going to die then & there. What follows is hospital appointments, despair, her neurosis though never going away recedes, until the next time. Slowly but surely it's going to get worse, crippling her more & more as time goes on.

She is approached by the enigmatic & powerful Packard who can peer into peoples souls & is willing to help her if she joins his disillusionist team. Which is a way of reforming hardcore criminals that slip through the net & continue their criminal activities without recourse. All she has to do is get close enough to be able to 'zing' them with her neurosis, till eventually they get 'rebooted' to become reformed members of the community.

What you get is a muti-faceted story where everything is not as it first appears, Mind Games grips you with it's undiluted interaction between the different characters, which not only challenges your perceptions but you find yourself doing a complete Uturn on who you think is right & who is in the wrong, but there still is no clear answer. The story stays with you after the last page. I think that is magic & a sign of a talent.

Brilliant premise, inately strong character & a wonderful book.

Cannot wait till the next one. Here's the link --- Double Cross comes out in Sept 2010 Enjoy....

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind Games 11 Jun 2010
By AngelGoneMad VINE VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Mind Games is the debut novel, first in a trilogy, of up and coming author Carolyn Crane. Her first novel is nothing like anything I have read before. It's original and full of zing.

The first time I read the synopsis of this book, I wasn't entirely sure if I would be my kind of book. But in the end I gave in and bought the it and I got really excited about getting to read it and I must say I was not disappointed in the slightest.

I was constantly on edge reading this book. I never knew what was going to happen in this story and what Justine was going to do next. She isn't a girl that gets pushed around easily. We see her go from a very severe hypochondriac to an all powerful zinging machine that helps reform the humans of Midcity that can't be proved guilty in court. Justine has help in the form of her disillusionist team mates, Shelby, Carter, Simon and Packard. But zinging comes at a cost.

Shelby has this dry humour about her and I absolutely loved her character to the bone. Carter is like my male double, especially when he is driving a car. Simon is the dangerous one in the group, he doesn't always follow the rules and makes his own boundaries. Packard is the leader of the disillusionists, he formed the group and decides the cases they take on.

My absolute favourite part of the book was the scene with the pool, which is a lot further in the book. This is the turning point in the book which will cause readers to really think about the story. I know I got confused from here on as I didn't know who was the good guy and who was the bad guy. The line seems to be really thin. I also love all the interaction that Justine has with Shelby and Simon. Although I didn't like Simon to begin with, but he sort of grew on me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and fun debut 16 May 2010
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I'm one of these people that loves to hear of new authors prior to their release as it gives me a chance to view the title without any prejudice. What occurs within this offering by Carolyn is an Urban Fantasy that lurks within the darker side of the genre. Its beautifully written but what makes this title so engrossing is the neuroses of the principle protagonista who fights not only against her panic attacks but the feelings that grow within as the tale progresses. A great offering and one that will make a few people sit up and pay attention as its characters just keep you glued to the last page.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book 1 Feb 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book. I have never read a book like this before and I wasn't sure it was my kind of book but within the first two chapters I got hooked. The story centers around Justine who is a hypochondriac who thinks she's dying from a rare brain disorder. She is totally obsessed with this imaginary illness and has lost most of her friends and is on the verge of losing her boyfriend when a handsome stranger offers her an out of her fear. The out gets rid of her fears but there's a cost. The world is that of people with special mental powers and a city descending into crime. It's a place where there is no black and white thinking only grey and Justine has to decide who to trust and what to believe in.

I loved Justine's character, you felt like you really were taking the journey with her. The chemistry between her and Packard was sizzling. Like I said I've never really read anything like this before but I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this. 21 Dec 2013

It's grown on me this series. The premise is interesting and the main characters wonderfully flawed. The pacing can be a bit slow, but I've re-read these books which I don't normally do. This is not a literary masterpiece but it's a good, compelling read filled with unusual characters, fueled by an interesting concept.
