Amazon.co.uk Review

It's widely accepted in this country that Americans have no sense of irony: Alanis Morissette neatly summed this up in her famously un-ironic hunt for a knife amidst all those spoons in her hit "Ironic" (although, in fairness, she is Canadian). American indie-rap trio Fun Lovin' Criminals, however, seem to have a firm grasp on pop's love of irony on their latest release, Mimosa, a collection of smooth (sorry, that's "Schmoove") cover versions, alternate takes and B-sides that's completely infused with the faint whiff of cheese. Their love of the whole gangster myth seems to have taken them into lounge territory; these are songs that would feel more at home in the sheen of a Vegas nightclub than the grit of a New York alleyway. It's obvious that they're going for a Sinatra vibe with this collection--no simple task--and it's to their credit that it almost works: Huey, their singer, is after all one of the coolest men on the planet (really, it's well documented). Their new version of "Bombin' The L" is awash with bongos, harmonicas and a wah-wah guitar, and their cover of Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train" is amusing for a few listens. Mimosa is not a particularly good collection of songs; it's therefore rather ironic that it's so enjoyable. --Robert Burrow

Once again the Criminals are back with even more schmoove style, this time in the form of a tribute/B-side/lounge album. Cheese is not a factor here, it's all smooth as silk. How could anyone say they did not instantly appreciate I'm Not In Love and Shining Star.
I just can't wait for their next album!

This was a total surprise for me. The choice of tracks to cover makes you wonder what you are in for but after the first few you can just settle back and let the CD play on and on. Scooby snacks is brilliant, and you will notice people do a double tack as they recognise the odd track. Everyone is guaranteed to start smiling when they hear I'm not in Love. The best CD I've heard in ages. Buy it.

Most people who have seen the Fun Lovin Criminals will agree that Huey is the coolest (white) man in the world. The band themselves are at their best as a lounging soundtrack, music for relaxing with friends, drinking martinis and smoking cigars to. With this in mind the thought of a FLC album containing nothing but schmooze versions of their songs and loungey covers was a terrific prospect that had me in front of the mirror perfecting my New York accent in anticipation.

Mimosa has some great songs on it, the highlights being new-but-already-becoming-classic 'Couldn't Get it Right', the fantastic version of 'Scooby Snacks', and the superb 'I Can't Get With That'. All are brilliant tracks and ideal for background music as you chill out. The one problem is that it doesn't seem to all fit together as an album.

Since producing a record as cool as Come Find Yourself, FLC haven't made an album that fits together as it should. The songs just don't flow as well as on their first CD, or in their live set. All their tracks are worth listening to, but it seems the band define a sound then move away in tempo or style. This sounds fine in theory, but doesn't work for them (I don't know why, it just doesn't). When I buy a FLC album it's to reach a comatose level of relaxation and Mimosa doesn't quite let me do that.

If you are a fan or buying the album for the individual songs then go ahead, you won't be disappointed. If however you are looking for a 'complete' album, or a smooth lounging soundtrack, make sure you have their first album, Come Find Yourself, first.

That aside it is a fantastic version of 'Scooby Snacks'...
