Product Description

Based on George Bernard Shaw s play, this was Peter Sellers first big international hit, thanks not only to the casting of Sophia Loren in the title role but a memorable scene in which she reveals her elaborate undergarments. She s not merely a millionairess but the world s richest woman but her inheritance comes with a catch: her late father s will states that she can only marry a man who can turn £500 into £15,000 within three months. But when she falls in love with Sellers altruistic Indian doctor, she discovers that he not only has no head for business, but that there s an equally binding requirement made of his own prospective bride, demanding that she adopt a very different lifestyle from the one she s used to. The superb supporting cast includes Alastair Sim as a Jeeves-like lawyer, Dennis Price as a caddish would-be suitor and Vittorio de Sica as an Italian restaurateur.

Best film of a Bernard Shaw play since Pygmalion...a delight. --Evening Standard

I remember seeing this on the tv as a child, and bought it to see in widescreen with Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren. The film is just as I remember it.

BUT - Maybe it is just my disc, but I think Prism Leisure have a cheek putting this out for sale if it is not, the quality on my disc is dire, it's a pretty poor transfer of a widescreen picture on to the old 4:3 format with black bars top and bottom, now I have good DVDs with the transfer done this way. But here the picture quality is really poor, the colours faded and dull giving it a grubby unwashed look. If I had not bought it for [...]I would have taken it back.

Is this film a romance or a comedy? Well both really. A nice change to see Peter Sellers toning down is physically idiotic chaos to give a straight performance. His voice this time is Indian, and a fittingly impressive one too! The transfer to DVD is impressive too for a 1960 film, the colour is also enriched compared to the video release some years back. Sophia Loren looks stunning too!

Disappointing ! 11 Sep 2003
By Irena
Format:DVD
This movie, directed by Vittorio De Sika, is based on Bernard Shaw play "The Millionairess".
But very little from the original play brilliance, wittiness and energy survived. The original plot was changed enormously in order to make it more "movie-like" and add some "movie-action".
The result is very disappointing - Sophia Loren looks unconvicing and her talent is waisted. Peter Sellers can not
resque the silly script.
If you like films of Vittorio De Sika starring Sophia Loren turn to such great movies as "Yesterday Today and Tomorrow" or "Marriage Itailan Style" and forget about "The Millionaress".

The DVD itself (released by Waterfall home entertainment)
has no any special features , even direct scene access is missing.
