A million brilliant poems - imagine that! Well, you only need to imagine 999,920 if you buy a copy of A Million Brilliant Poems (part one), chosen by Roger Stevens and published by A & C Black - a brilliantly nearly rhyming title for a brilliantly conceived series. (OK, I might quibble and suggest that only 79 are truly brilliant, but you can't please everyone!)
What sets apart this poetry book for children (aged 9 - 90) and makes it ring a chord with youngsters is that the poems are all modern, mostly 21st century, so no neath, thous, eres or twills among them. Many of the poems are not in print for the first time, but they have been selected for their quality and lively appeal. The range, style and subject matter is wide enough to attract the fussiest readers, and the poems are short enough to keep them turning the pages. Attractively illustrated by Jessie Ford, the book deserves a space on every child's shelf, classroom and library shelves, too. As its sub-title suggests, it is a showcase for 'the best children's poetry today'.
