I have recently bought a new mill drill. Although a professional mechanical engineer my workshop training many years ago was of a general nature and mainly lathe work. This book is a perfect small reference document for my needs.

Don't be fooled like I was 13 May 2014

Do not buy this book **if** you already own "Milling Machine & Accessories: And Accessories Choosing and Using (Workshop Practice Series #49)" by the same author. Despite different titles, different publishers and different covers it is EXACTLY the same as this book. Chapter by chapter. Word for word. Picture by picture. Amazon has seen fit allow different text descriptions of each implying the content is different. It is not. I feel badly abused by both the author and Amazon. I will never trust or buy another book by this author again.

Good introduction 1 July 2013
By Phillip Ausburn - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
The book is a good introduction to setting up a small machine tool. Types of cutters and work hold down techniques are covered in good detail. Their is also sections on accessories and how to use them. The fact that this book was written first for an English audience and primarily uses metric units is a little distracting but the quality of the content makes up for this slight negative. I would have liked to have seen more examples of how to perform common machine tool task but overall the book was worth the cost.

The Milling Machine for Home Machinists by Harold Hall 23 Jun. 2013
By CDP and his Amazon Habit of purchases! ! - Published on Amazon.com

I am not a machinist and buying this book, based on what I wanted from it and the cost, I do feel it presents a good basic understanding of the Milling Machine and it's use. This book provides the necessary information and explanations of the machine and it's basic operation. I gives the reader the basic layout of the milling machine, it's use and operation. This is what I needed to know. I wanted to have a basic explanation of the machine, some information on setup and use and some information on milling tools and their use. This book gets me started to understand what the milling machine entails, it's operation and it's use. I feel it is worth the price paid to have as a reference book.

The author offers some valuable advise regarding the best type of machine to buy and which ancillary tooling ... 30 July 2014
By imarelic - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Maybe it's because the author's a Brit and I'm a Yank, but I found his writing style to very hard to follow and confusing. But, laboriously, he gets his point across. Be advised, that this is not an instructional book that will teach the reader how to perform any particular operation on a mill. It is targeted at the home hobbyist, looking to buy an imported Chinese "mini-mill", mill-drill etc. The author offers some valuable advise regarding the best type of machine to buy and which ancillary tooling to purchase first, to get them started and what not to waste money on. This book is well worth the cheap price if you are a hobbyist, at that particular "pre-purchase" stage.

Very basic info on milling machines. Some of the information is outdated. This book is best for somebody who is considering buying a milling machine and knows nothing about the different machines, tooling or setup.
