Product Description

Millicent Martin's West End, Broadway, recording, TV and film career has spanned six decades and Sepia is proud to release her debut solo CD! British actress Millicent Martin made her Broadway debut with Julie Andrews in the 1954 production of 'The Boy Friend'. In London's West End she has starred in stage musicals such as 'Expresso Bongo', 'The Crooked Mile', 'Our Man Crichton' and 'Side By Side By Sondheim'. Millie's other Broadway credits include '42nd Street' and 'Side By Side By Sondheim' for which she received a Tony Award nomination. In the early 1960s Millie became known to TV audiences as the resident singer of topical songs on the weekly satire show 'That Was The Week That Was'. She also starred in the 1966 film 'Alfie' and the film musical of 'Stop The World I Want To Get Off'. In the mid-1960s Millie hosted her own BBC TV series called 'Mainly Millicent' that ran for 3 years. In recent years she has appeared as Gertrude Moon, Daphne's mother, in the TV sit-com Frasier and a U.S resident today, Millie works a lot for the Disney Channel in shows like 'The Suite Life Of Zack and Cody' and Jonas. The 20 tracks on this CD were recorded in the late 1950s.

Finally, Millicent Martin has an album credited to her own name. Millicent Martin is a veteran entertainer, having done everything from Broadway to British TV, mention it, and she's done it. She received her first Tony nomination for the musical revue "Sondheim on Sondheim", which was a big success, and her second nomination for "King of Hearts" in 1979. A well-respected actress among her peers, Sondheim himself proclaimed her version of "I'm Still Here" to be the best, and coming from Sondheim himself, that is quite the compliment.

Millicent Martin had a beautiful voice, that felt equally at home singing bluesy standards like "I Got It Bad", to Vaudeville nuggest like "You Made Me Love You". She sings with her entire heart, and she's got a truly lovely vibrato that wraps up her tender readings perfectly. This is her, to my knowledge, only solo recording. I never ever thought that it would be issued on CD, so this was quite a surprise. The sound quality is acceptable, but not pristine. There are a couple of issues, but I really don't care. I have waited for years to have it, so all is forgiven. On a side note: Millicent released a version of "In the Summer of His Years", which peaked at #104 on the pop charts.

Highlights: "You Made Me Love You", "When the World Was Young", "At Sundown" and "Our Language of Love".

An LP called Millicent was issued in 1962 on the Parlophone label which as far as I can recall was full of standards so nothing special. Her finest hour came a year later with her socking version of Gravy Waltz which was a vocal version of the Steve Allen instro which also had a version by Mel Torme.
A wonder though her Kennedy tribute never did more in the States where she was known before she was here through the Broadway debut with Julie Andrews

nothing that really grabbed me 2 Nov 2010

A good singer with good material, but most of the songs are slow and there was nothing about her singing or the arrangements that really grabbed me.
