Mike Patton can do everything. He can rap, he can sing rock anthems, he can scream like no one else and he can croon as well as Sinatra. The guy has got it all.
I recently saw Tomahawk, The Melvins and Fantomas all on the same bill. I hadn't heard anything of Fantomas so I was looking forward to seeing what they were all about and the day afterwards, I went straight out and purchased this live album, so I was not disappointed.
This is not your normal everyday, run of the mill type music, but there again, Mike Patton is not your normal, everyday, run of the mill type musician. What we have here is a mixture of allsorts. From pure musical noise and screaming to the odd croon. It's certainly not for everyone, but anybody who appreciates what Mike Patton is about should enjoy this.
This is a perfect record of what Fantomas do live and I seriously recommend it to any fan who has an open mind to music.

This is a live cd, i know live cds can not always be good quality etc but this 1 is!!! it features fantomas+the melvins on stage together doing a 18 track setlist which passes by in about 45 minutes, the best thing bout this cd is that the tracks from fantomas' 1st album actually have names, eg track 29 AKA puddlumpumpow!! is actually called "Mushing with the phunts" - strange indeed!!!
This cd is a must if your are a hardcore fan of either the melvins or fantomas but not advised for the lighthearted!!!

New Years Eve in San Francisco where two of US hardcores' most stubborn souls battle it out on one stage. At the same time. Sounds odd. Sounds weird. Oh it does. Sound good? Oh my God yeah.

For one night only, US legends *The Melvins, teamed up with kindred spirits Fantomas to perform in a big band style. The roll call of bands these members have been in is enough to astound and amaze. And the music they made may appall those who think metal extends as far as the impotent Alien Ant Farm and their ilk. Slayer. Nirvana. Faith No More. Mr. Bungle. Tomahawk. And it sounds like all of these bands playing at once, and more.

With seven people on stage, two bands beat as one, tackling material from both bands repertoire, as well as unveiling new material - well, you can't call them songs - and bizarre movie theme covers. Initially it seems to offer far far more in the way of new material than it actually does though there are at least two Melvins compositions here, several from the premier Fantomas album (now retitled from 'Page 1', 'Page 2' etc to things like 'Ripping Chicken Meat', 'Musthing With The Phunts', etc..), and a couple from the second Fantomas album - the mighty 'Directors Cut'.

The albums starts as it means to go on with a defiant 'Good Morning Slaves' - a roar and a scream as two bands battle it out on one stage for supremacy and control. Or is it two separate, similar entities colliding in a force that is more than the sum of parts? I have no idea. But it's loud. It roars and screams. And it doesn't have anything resembling discernable vocals, a chorus, or riffs.

A quick glance at the titles on this release should indicate exactly what type of record this is.

it seems like i'm the only one who likes this album... 21 Jun. 2006
A Kid's Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
First of all im not a kid, i'm just writing on here because I don't have a email to an account with. I am a big fan of the Melvins and the only Fantomas album I've heard is suspended animation but I love it. I was browsing thru amazon when I found this. I gave the sound clips a listen and it sounded interesting and different. So I decided to buy it, and I love it! It has a few flaws so I could rate it four stars or maybe even three stars but I love it so much that i can't. I highly recommend this/

Not quite perfect, but so close 3 Feb. 2003
By "drumb" - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The only official Melvins/Fantomas bigband release recorded live at Slims on New Years Eve is an exercise in power to say the very least. Uniting two of the underground's most inventive and unique bands as one single monolithic 8-person supergroup, the Fantomas/Melvins combined band's sheer volume and personnel are staggering. Just the prospect of hearing Dave Lombardo and Dale Crover together on the same stage, two of rock's most pummeling and ferocious drummers, should be incentive enough to buy this CD, but the rest of the extended band's veteran rockers are not too shabby either. King Buzzo growls every syllable while laying down some of the heaviest, grinding riffs that have ever oozed their way out of his guitar, Patton screeches like a madman, Stone revels in his own sonic noise montages, and Trevor Dunn and Kevin Rutmanis hold down the set's bottom end with their bombastic low frequency blasts. While Fantomas and The Melvins may all be good friends and even include one of the same members (King Buzzo), their styles are at exact opposite ends of the spectrum. The resulting clash of ideas is fascinating, forcefully combining the slow bludgeoning work of the Melvins with the frenetic fury of Fantomas to create something that is truly formidable in its violently contrasting elements. The songs themselves are an even mix of Melvins and Fantomas originals, with a few covers off The Director's Cut as well, but the additional members involved bring new individual parts to every track that give the entire show a fresh layer of complex intricacy. Unfortunately, the actual sound quality of the performance's source tapes is not that great and although Buzzo did a wonderfully comprehensive job of compiling and cleaning up this epic CD, especially the flawless transitions between tracks, the sound quality still prevents me from giving it a full five stars. Then again, Millennium Monsterworks is far from the average cassette recording by a semi drunk audience member, and still sounds quite professional; It is simply not on par with the quality of past live releases like "Your Choice Live Series Vol. 12" or "Colossus of Destiny". A brilliant idea and undoubtedly an amazing concert experience, Millennium Monsterworks falters a bit in its recorded version, but even with these minor flaws, this album should still satisfy fans of either of one of these genius bands.

2 AMAZING Bands, Playing At The Same Time, Live=Decent.. 24 Feb. 2004
By Adam J. Bernstein - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This gets more of a three and a half. Mainly becuase i'm a big fan of both of these bands. But this recording isn't that great. Theres nothing wrong with the sound quality, its just that Its a medieocre album. It gets a little boring. I have a feeling it would have been better in the studio, with slightly longer songs. The versions of Cape Fear, Hooch, and Night Goat are amazing how ever! Those three tracks alone are worht the price. But I expected more from such a great concept. However, I did have the privalage of Seeing the Fantomas/Melvins Big Band live last summer, and it was an amazing experience! Don't let this album detuor you from seeing them live if you get the chance!

If You've Ever Wanted To Hear Fantomas Live .... 8 April 2002
By Pillowhead - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Here's your chance. This is a great companion piece to the two Fantomas albums "Director's Cut" and their self titled debut. The sound quality on this live release is excellent and you get to hear "The Omen" theme live as well as some Melvins favorites. I find myself laughing when listening to this cd because I picture Mike Patton screaming, squacking, and making wierd sounds into his microphones in front of a New Year's crowd.
Recommended for Fantomas, Mike Patton, Mr. Bungle, and noise rock fans. Pick this puppy up.
