Book Description

From Napoleon Bonaparte to Winston Churchill, military experience has provided both men and women down the ages with a wealth of sage advice and wise council, not only on wartime strategy, but on lessons for living a good life; from the moral and political dimensions of conflict, to leadership, work, marriage, family and friendship. Historian Jeremy Archer has delved into his personal archives to compile an absorbing and illuminating collection of advice from military figures through the ages, from great generals and military strategists, to wartime leaders, soldiers, writers and poets. Ranging in tone from the heartfelt – such as letters of advice written from fathers to sons – to more light-hearted instruction, Jeremy Archer’s collection of military wisdom provides a wealth of wise words, humorous anecdotes and witty bon mots, as well as life lessons learned by military figures that still resonate strongly today.

About the Author

After serving in the British Army for ten years, Jeremy Archer now lives in London and works in the City. An enthusiastic historian, his first book, Home for Christmas, was an anthology of wartime Christmas extracts from 1777 to the present day. His second, Away at Christmas, looked at how the season was celebrated by some of the world's best-known explorers. His third, A Royal Christmas, investigated how the Royal family have celebrated Christmas day, from the Victorian era to the present day. Hugo Vickers described it as 'a rich achievement full of glorious anecdotes'.

By John
As an ex-soldier myself I really enjoyed recalling so much that has been passed down from generation to generation in all parts of the military. The wonderful wisdom that reflects on shared experiences that are unique to those who serve in the armed forces and the amazing wit that keeps everyone sane, no matter how crazy the circumstances, both in peace and war. But this is a book whose appeal is not limited to those who have served. So much 'wit and wisdom', not to mention vocabulary, has been passed on to the wider world and it will appeal to a very wide audience. I know only too well how much soldiers whinge and gripe while serving, no matter the circumstances good or bad. Once released from their military duties, nearly all of them look back on those years as the best experiences of their lives. There is much in this book that provides some sort of narrative or explanation to that paradox.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good translation - Military to Civilian 7 Nov. 2013
A must have for civilians who have either interfaced, or have to interface with ex or serving military. An excellent translation manual for the civi b******(one who has never served in the UK Armed Forces) and partial thesaurus for the enormous volume (a number similar to that of flip-flops owned by members of a large Far-Eastern country) of military acronyms and abbreviations.
