This is a very basic book that barely skims the surface of the Military airfields of Britain. Most of the information contained in the book seems to have been plagiarised from other, more detailed works such as 'Action Stations' or the excellent series that deal County by County with all the airfields contained within that particular county such as Suffolk Airfield of WW2 etc.
It is assumed that the target audience for this very basic book would be school children studying as part of a history project, or for ramblers etc who might have reason to visit such places. The book is littered with 'Did you know' pearls of information that merely re-enforce its basic nature. Irritatingly, the authors refer to RAF Squadron numbers as '49th Squadron', '57th Squadron' etc!

I could find no real evidence within the book that the authors had investigated the reasons behind why an airfield had been built in the location that it was, nor how the building of the airfield had changed the surrounding area. It did not address the effects on local communities of the influx of those manning the airfields. The 'legacy' of the airfields following the cessation of hostilities is barely touched upon other than a vague mention of what is left of each airfield now.

This poor book is not for the serious student of Military Airfield architecture or history, and who are well advised to stay clear of this and go for the Action Stations or other books that deal in far greater detail with the subject. This is a very amateurish effort and does not compare at all well with the many excellent books now available that deal with Britain's wartime airfields. A grave disappointment and a waste of money!

A rather superficial skimming across the airfields of Britain. It goes into great detail about an American film star spending a few weeks at a particular airfield, there but misses information of historical interest on others. Useful for determining that an airfield was there, but not a lot else.

Quite interesting, especially for anyone researching old fields that have dissapeared

Quite good, the descriptions could be a bit more explorative.

Bought as a present, this turned out to be a very suitable book. It covered the topic well and contained excellent illustrations. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the RAF in WW2.

An interesting compilation of every military airfield known to have been use during World War Two, tracing the history of each one and taking it to the present day use. Relevant photographs are interspersed throughout the book as well as interesting, and sometimes, little known facts about some of the airfields. If World War Two history or aviation is your interest then this wwill not disappoint you.
