Books on the history of aircraft roundels are very rare - almost none in the last dozen years .Hence this is a real labour of passion by John Cochrane and it has taken almost 15 years since the publication of the first edition with the same name and by the same authors by Airlife - for a publisher to finally release an update on this exotic subject. They also have a web site as a companion but it needs updation.

If ever you wondered on the historical roundels for a particular country and where could you look it up - this is the one book which has it all.The authors have their sources in the myraid enthusiasts around the world including me and have included some of the rare historical roundels for this updated edition.

Its published in glorious full colour - and comprises around 142 Pp (the authors originally planned a detailed 2 volume which Crecy compressed into a single volume so the above cover is incorrect as its no longer A-K )- it depicts all the latest roundels globally including all the notable historical roundels for countries which no longer exist like Katanga , Biafra South Vietnam etc approx 500 + in all . The opening description of Afghanistan with around 9 historical roundels and a 2 Page history set up a nice opening.

The new roundels include Abkhazia, Iraq Air Force ,Chad ,Afghanistan etc and some of the erroneous roundels from other works omitted.

Instead of diagrams and artwork profiles as in the earlier edition by Airlife - the updated edition features colour pictures (some are very tiny and unclear) - hence the book loses one star as the diagrams in the previous edition also depicted the fin flashes which are missing and a disappointment for me .

This must rate as the WORST book I have purchasedf through Amazon, it says on the cover 'a passion for accuracy' well they missed the mark by a very long margin indeed with this publication. There are so many typo's and incorrect entries it is hard to know were to start but on page 127 it states that the U.K. Royal air force for the year 1047 were............, had there been a RAF in 1047 the Battle of Hastings would have had a very differant out come, emply a compertent proof reader before you publuish any more. I have now cancelled my preorder for the next Voloum, just a shame with holiday between arrival of the book and opening it has made it to late to seen this one back. I would not recommend this book to my worst enemy it borders on disinformation.

Volume 1 actually a complete book on the subject. 16 Sep 2014

Just wanted everyone to know that " Volume 1 " is in actuality a book that covers all insignia from A - Z. I didn't buy this book for months because volume 2 never seemed available. I finally bought the book figuring some day Volume 2 would become available. i was pleasantly surprised that upon receipt of the book it was a complete work in of itself and not just from A- K or whatever it said in the item description. The book is excellent and gives a nice description and consise history of each air force. So buy the book because it's complete and a very good book as well.
