5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of its Kind ! 2 Dec 2010
By Taiga
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Exceptional book for anyone who wants to know about military binoculars & telescopes. The German text is thorough and detailed and the English summaries are clear and easy to follow. ( No GermGlish here! ) The photographs are good and cover a wide range of binoculars, telescopes, rangefinders & other optical equipment. It could be improved but only by rating each item by availability. Highly recommended. If you need ONE book to cover this subject; this is it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on binoculars yet. 20 May 2001
By Mikdane - Published on
This is one of the best books made on military binoculars yet. It covers the early use of galilean field binoculars, and proceeds to Prismatic binoculars, covering both ordinary hand held, as well as large aperture fix-mounted binoculars. The author is german, and the book concentrates on german 20th century military optics. French, russian, UK and US binoculars are covered too, but not extensively. Pictures all have german AND english texts, and some parts of the book is written in english. Basic reference material is included, like German production codes, and some Zeiss serial numbers. I have had this book for two years now, and being a binocular collector, I can only recommend this as excellent!.
5.0 out of 5 stars an authorative book with hidden gems 28 Feb 2014
By Peter Serne - Published on
Written by a famous authority, the book indeed contains a wealth of knowledge. Richly illustrated, the book presents many, many details that cannot be found elsewhere. Beyond any doubt, this book is a must-have for any serious collector and it is worth every penny. Is it an ideal book? No.

The main text is in German. Being able to read both languages, I find the English translations and figure captions less detailed than the original german texts; many details are limited to the German text only.
A further point of criticism is the build-up of the book. Although the first chapters follow a logical structure, the later chapters gradually evolve into a collection of specialised individual contributions, joined together by mr. Seeger as an editor (or so it seems to me).
Nothing wrong with that, but it does not help searching for something in particular. An overwhelmingly large index however helps to overcome this slight drawback although it will take some time and effort to check all indexed entries.

If you are a binocular lover and if you are able to spend the money: do not hesitate and buy the book!
5.0 out of 5 stars A Great book if you like Military Optics. 30 Mar 2012

Dr Hans Seeger's "Grey Book" is the book you need to be buying if you are looking for the best guide available to Military Binoculars.
The text us mainly in German but never fear , translations can be found on line and the book which is richly illustrated with photos of all examples covered, the text for all photos is in German/ English.
This is an outstanding work one which you can really learn from and if you have not seen it you will be very surprised at what it covers.
An excellent book.
