Finally !!! 20 Jan 2005
Format:DVD
This dvd is a dream (of mine at least) come true! What we're getting here is the complete show (38 minutes) of the Miles Davis septet at the Isle of Wight festival, August 29, 1970 (uninterrupted and without voice-over !) in the best sound (5.1 and PCM) and picture quality. In addition to that we get interviews with all of Miles' sidemen of this show - Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Gary Bartz, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette and Airto Moreira (who takes the opportunity for a spontaneous percussion session) and with sidemen from other periods (Dave Liebman, Herbie Hancock, Pete Cosey, Mtume, etc.. All of them obviously still enjoy telling us what an exceptional musician and band-leader Miles was and why. The power of Miles' inspiration still lingers with all of them and it is also mentioned that very few of Miles' former sidemen ever played as well again as when they were with him. Two exceptions that come to (my) mind are John McLaughlin and Keith Jarrett, of course. Interspersed wit these interviews we get (short, unfortunately) excerpts of other Miles concerts, like the Steve Allen Show in the 50s, Copenhagen '69 and '71, Stockholm and Tokyo '73, etc.. I really hope this dvd becomes a commercial success. Thanks a lot to Murray Lerner, the filmmaker and producer of this show. You did a great job! In my opinion, the Miles Davis gig was by far the most interesting of the whole I.o.W. festival, with Jimi Hendrix a close second. If this dvd is a commercial success, we might still have hope for further releases of other great Miles Davis shows from the period of '69 to '75 (my favourite) and would not have to turn to internet auctions and other sources for video copies of mostly inferior quality. It's about time also, that the Miles Davis Estate finally wakes up (look at the activities of the Jimi Hendrix Estate !) and does something in this direction instead of leaving everything to the black market. I think - the commercial possibilities aside - the Estate owes this to Miles.

Wow! This is a great dvd. Finally some Miles Davis 70's rockjazz explorations visuallized on dvd. Fantastic to watch the 36 min. long live concert of the Miles Davis Group at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970. What a superior music compared with many rock acts that day! Watch only drummer Jack DéJohnette. He is far out much better than any rockdrummer around. These people are musicians: Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Gary Bartz.
Further the dvd contains many interviews of Miles players and admirers (one hater) and excerpts of other concerts in the past.Best Miles dvd around! Buy it.

I see and I believe 25 Nov 2007

It took me a while to like Bitches Brew and other Miles Davis jazz-funk stuff from that era having become a fan of him through his two great quintets. But I loved this from the first viewing. Maybe it's because I can see what is going on as well as hear. Keith Jarret writhes at his Fender piano like a man possessed, whilst Chick Corea stares intensely ahead from his, as if absorbing everything with utter concentration. Jack de Johnette swings like any jazz drummer from any era, whilst Dave Holland on bass looks like he could have stepped out of any rock band of the time. Airto Moreira plays some weird percussion instruments and looks like he could be a virtuoso with a couple of spoons and bin lid. Together, they create a shifting groove, sometimes intense, sometimes mellow, sometimes swinging, sometimes more like a rock band riff-led thing. Over it Miles Davis adds his lifetime of knowledge, blistering high-pitched runs, short staccato figures, even a bit of cup mute for a short while. Gary Bartz plays some awesomely beautiful soprano sax too - you think, "Miles better get back on stage quick or he's going to be a sideman in this band". But when he does re-enter, there is no doubt who is master. Everything revolves around him. Full marks to Murray Lerner for the way this is shot and edited. He cuts to each musician at just the right time so that you notice what they are contributing to what's going on. You see Miles in a red jumper against the red backdrop on stage and then from behind against the blue sky of twilight (a different kind of blue?). Nice touch. After 38 continuous minutes Miles salutes the audience, lifts his bag and his red leather jacket and saunters off the stage and two roadies behind an amp follow him with their eyes as if to say "what the hell was that all about?" Jazz-rock, jazz-funk, jazz-fusion, not jazz at all, pretentious crap, work of genius. "Call it anything" said Miles. Watch the concert first before all the interviews. All the musicians say interesting things and Santana has some other-worldly insights. But it is the concert and your own response that is most important. I call it great.
