I can't believe how unheard of this film is, further to that - I hope this is ordered in soon, this is one of the greatest American works of all time.

Elain May has made a real gem about two best friends in the gang world, finding out just how much their friendship can take.
If you think that films like Pulp Fiction are the be all and end all of movies, you're in for a surprise. While the characters have a superficial similarity to Tarantino's characters and also play with our expectations she isn't doing it to bowl us over or shock us, but is merely a side affect of the insight the film has and what it reveals about us. In a nutshell this film is about life and isn't just like a comic book.

The two performances by Peter Falk and the late John Cassavetes are just so goooood. Cassavetes influence is all over this movie, and has the same desparate energy as Cassavetes own movies like Love Streams and Husbands.

You should also check other May film's like The Heartbreak Kid.

This is a fantastic film. Mikey and Nicky are two hoods. Nicky is convinced that a hit has been put on him by the head of their crime family, while Mikey tries to calm him down and look after him as he always does. Except that Mikey has been sent to bring Nicky to the hit. Unfortunately narcissistic impulsive Nicky can't be kept in place and he drags Mikey through visits to bars, childhood haunts and girlfriends' flats. Along the way we see that the initially pally and close relationship has actually collapsed into something more bitter and angry.

Shot in wobbly cam (as I like to call it) the performances of John Cassavetes and the marvellous Peter Falk (he's so much more than Columbo) are incredible. Their characters are likeable but flawed and repulsive but so real. They fill the screen with electricity. There's also a great comic turn from Ned Beatty as the hitman mean to be taking out Nicky. In fact there is a good bit of humour in the film as well as great dialogue and action.

This is a brilliant brilliant film. Watch it.

Mikey and Nicky concerns the story of two friends played by John Cassavetes and Peter Falk, who play two minor mobsters in the film and how their relationship comes under strain when one of them Nickey (John Cassavetes) thinks he is about to be "whacked" by his bosses. Little knowing that it is his own best friend Mikey (Peter Falk) who has been sent to do the dirty deed. The film focuses on the gradual disintergration of the two friends relationship as we find out more about the characters backgrounds during the film progression leading to revelations between the two friends that changes both their lives forever and leads ultimately to a tragic conclusion.

The film was directed by Elaine May, who was more known for her comedic work than this dark piece, but in fact directs the action quite brilliantly as we see the male protagonists macho facade begin to slip. The performances of the two leads are both terrific and in fact are reminiscent of Cassavetes own work as a director in films like "The killing of a chinese bookie".

I recommend this film to anyone who likes to see well written, well acted drama with a dark edge to it. Check this film out and I assure you, you will not be disappointed.
