A nice chatty version of a guide book, though a little dated. It does celebrate the island and points out a range of things that you might otherwise miss. There do not seem to be any current guidebooks (2010) totally devoted to Rarotonga, so this is as good an introduction, if a bit quirky, as you are likely to get.

I can't recommend Papa Mike's Cook Island Handbook enough. Going to the Cook Islands is an amazing adventure and with Papa's Handbook my husband and I didn't miss a thing. Well written, with humor and wit, the book is designed for those of us that tend to avoid big tours, choosing more to explore on our own. Get this book, plan your trip, you can count on Papa Mike's up to date information. And make sure to take the book along with you to the Cooks, we discovered so many interesting places that the normal traveler wouldn't with out the book. Kia Orana, Joanne

We loved our trip to the Cooks, thanks in big part to Papa Mike's Cook Islands Handbook. The book, which we carried everywhere, is very funny, personable and up to date. It's crammed with well organized information and ideas that really maximized our good times and island appreciation while traveling in the Cooks. From the special little details like singer, Jake Numunga's live musical greeting and departure at Rarotonga's airport to an entire listing with emails for all the available lodging, this book really helped us plan and appreciate our trip. The book's even got a schedule of all the Island Night dance shows and they are really special as the Papa said they would be. We visited three different islands and found this book's information and tips all right on. We were able to plan our activities on the outer islands and make most of our arrangements in advance, which was a huge benefit. This book covers valuable details from bar crawling to scuba diving, as the Papa seems well connected with all the island goings-on. I highly recommend getting this book if you want to have a great Cook Island trip with the least hassle and the most fun and enjoyment!

Great Intro to the Islands

I have been planning my Rarotonga trip for 6 months and I saw this book being recommended when I bought Tracks and Plants Guide book. This one arrived first, and when I got home from work I sat on the couch and finished the whole thing. It has some great insight and ideas for your island adventure. The author does not seem to have done many of the hikes or other activities I am planning, but he does offer more detailed descriptions of how to do them than the Lonely Planet guide. He also gave me some ideas I did not know existed, like fishing for flying fish.
If you are planning on heading to the Cook Islands this will be a helpful guide for planning your trip. When you are there it is small enough to bring, and has enough information to justify the luggage space.
