Product Description

One of Britain's most popular TV impressionists and performers from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s, Mike Yarwood was the Rory Bremner of his day. This collection features a 'best-of' compilation of Yarwood's work, including episodes of 'Yarwood in Town', 'It's Mike Yarwood', 'Mike Yarwood's Christmas Special', 'The Best of Mike Yarwood' and 'This is Him!'.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS HIM 24 Mar 2008

Let's face it, there aren't many impressionists around at any one time. It isn't easy to impersonate people and no one ever gets it quite right. Mike Yarwood came close enough, although I think his voice was rather nasal and that affected his vocal mimicry to a small extent. If he couldn't get the voice right, he made up for it by getting the mannerisms, and I guess he was lucky because there were so many characters around at the time for him to draw upon. He did most of them: Bob Monkhouse, Hughie Green, Steptoe and Son, Frank Spencer ( the character from 'Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em ), Frankie Howerd, Eric Morecambe -- the list goes on. There were the politicians, of course: Harold Wilson, Ted Heath, Denis Healey and James Callaghan, although he wasn't politically biased. He also did a passable impression of Prince Charles.
The difference between him and today's performers is that he was a genuinely likeable guy and the audience warmed to him. He wasn't cocky or pretentious and he did not really send people up. He just entertained by doing impressions of the people that everybody loved to watch. He didn't just do one-liners either. He did some quite lengthy sketches and had to remain in character for a considerable time, but that was okay because the sketches were well written. He sang as well. He didn't have a great voice, but entertainers were expected to be more versatile then, and besides he did impressions of the top singers like Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.
His downfall, unfortunately, was that he lost his confidence and he also had a drink problem, which had severe consequences for his marriage and his career.

I was a huge fan of Mike Yarwood in the 70's and 80's.The king of all mimics. His kind of humour was fun without hitting below the belt. Television Entertainment as it should be.
So glad this DVD collection is now avaibable - brings back so many great memories.

The inimitable Mike Yarwood. Some of the personalities he lampoons will probably draw looks of perplexity from today's youngsters - but all the impressions we remember Mike for are there to bring back those nostalgic memories! Overall, I'm very pleased with this DVD

5.0 out of 5 stars Top entertainment from the king of mimics 18 Jun 2009
This is perfect, top-notch entertainment, from when television was worth watching. The excellent documentary film is an invaluable supplement, and provides an opportunity to realise the mastery of the man, as well as all of the work, from the multitude of people, that went into the production of such quality TV entertainment.
