KAFKA'S COLOURS; OEDIPUS SPEAKS
A masterpiece. This film dwells with the formation of "CHARACTER" (with capital letters). A son tries to escape what seems to be a fateful destiny, only to find out that his quest leads him to a final confrontation with his father, formally absent, but very present in his life. The undertones of the wretched relationship between father and son are presented with superb craftmanship by Jan Decleir. The depiction of the oppressive society and conventions that have to be confronted by the young man, in order to pursue his independence and liberation, is very powerful and stirring.
If you are into something deeper than common Hollywood or European filmmaking standards, this is a picture you will enjoy and view more than once.

5.0 out of 5 stars gripping intelligent drama, 11 Feb 2001
By A Customer
character is a truely fantastic piece of cinema, filled with suspence and maintaining viewer interest throughout the film, with uncertainty as too how it is resolved. the mother-son relationship is fantastically portrayed, as are all the characters. The fact that it is subtitled does nothing to diminish the story..in fact, personally i found it added to the interest hearing it in dutch. it is certainly one of my favourite films and shows hoow european film-making is far better than its shallow, american counterparts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch and enjoy a true offbeat classic, 6 Jul 2006
By Top Tec (Leicester, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Absolute class - so deserving of a region 2 release. It is a European movie after all!
Great idea, top locations, wonderfully acted, intelligent plot, subtle, and gently humourous. One to savour and worth getting a multi region DVD player for.
Phillistines need not apply.
