Product Description

Product Description

One of the most gifted British jazzmen of his age, and one of the most audacious musical pioneers of all time, Mike Taylor died tragically young in late January 1969. Taylor left just two albums (Pendulum and Trio), together with co-writes with Ginger Baker for Cream’s Wheels Of Fire album. Recorded over two days in June 1973, at Denis Preston’s Lansdowne Studios in London, this fabulous memorial of Taylor compositions is performed by a who’s who of modern British jazz, including Jon Hiseman, Barbara Thompson, Ian Carr, Neil Ardley, Henry Lowther, Dave Gelly and Norma Winstone. This album of Taylor’s surviving orchestral music, jazz tunes and songs serves both as a memorial to him and to preserve his work as a composer and song writer for posterity. It presents the full set list, re-mastered from Neil Ardley’s original tapes, and includes a generous 20-page booklet with extensive booklet notes on Taylor and the album’s recording by Dave Gelly, complemented by previously-unseen photography. Tracks: Half Blue / Pendulum / I See You / Son Of Red Blues - Brown Thursday / Song Of Love / Folk Dance No 2 / Summer Sounds / Land Of Rhyme In Time / Timewind / Jumping Off The Sun / Black And White Raga.

Though he co-wrote for Cream, pianist and composer Mike Taylor never made the jump to jazz's rockier climes of the late '60s and early '70s. Jon Hiseman moved to Colosseum, Ian Carr to Nucleus - both play beautifully on this elegant, previously -unreleased 1973 tribute to the jazz genius who walked into the sea in the spring of 1969. 'Mike Taylor Remembered' was the brainchild of Neil Ardley (also sadly gone now) and it was he who corralled up the genre's finest to make a compilation of Taylor's quirky and original creations, originally recorded with his quartet across only two albums before he effectively took off on a two-year extended acid trip that reduced him to a gibbering and unrecognisable vagrant. Taylor's experience matches that of rock's Syd Barrett, but for his early (and still unexplained) death. The rest of the line-up here speaks reams for the regard and affection Taylor was nonetheless held in: Norman Winstone, Barbara Thompson, Henry Lowther, Ray Warleigh, Peter Lemer, Tony Fisher and more, including Dave Gelly, today jazz critic on The Observer newspaper, who recounts the tragic story of Mike Taylor and the making of these memorial recordings in an expansive, well packaged release that is truly a lost-and-found essential of modern British jazz.

This is a very enjoyable collection, that lacks the light touch of the man himself but which stands up well in its own right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Genius of composition and interpretation! 7 Jan 2009

I am an avid jazz listener, especially modern stuff. After all of my years of loving (and still do!) progressive rock, I keep leaning in the direction of modern jazz, in particular - English jazz.

I had heard of Mike Taylor, but always kind of filtered it out as one of those, drugy, nearly do goods, that people call genius, but in reality is imaginative but not professional. WAS I WRONG WITH MIKE TAYLOR!

This beautiful representation, done with care, respect and love for Mike Taylor, is living proof that Mr. Taylor's life was not lost, but now is memorialized in this fantastic package.

PLEASE, if you like challenging (very Neil Ardley influenced here) jazz/classical/prog rock music, this one is a must for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable! 7 Jan 2010

I only knew of Mike Taylor from his credits on the Cream recordings, and was curious. This is a great CD!!! What a genius he was. What a tragedy the he lived such a short and sad life, and that so much of his music was never heard, and much lost (by his own doing)...but the real point is that this CD is a spectacular rendition of a good bunch of his music. I just love it dearly. I cry as I listen, as the music is so cool, so well performed, and Mike so lost to us. This is rare music. Oh, and I am not really a jazz guy at all; I like good music whatever type. It is very jazzy, but it just plain really great music!
