Mike Routledge - born 1940 Nottingham, England. Mike was ten years old when he started to help in a local boatyard. He left school aged 15 and started work as mate on a river tug (towing barge) running between Nottingham and Hull. Later he worked on narrowboats and various other vessels owned by British waterways.
Mike then worked full time in the boatyard and was involved in repairing and building boats including all aspects of boatyard work. In 1960 he married a local girl named Margaret and after 50 years they are still happily married. Mike & Margaret have one son who lives in Australia. In later years Mike drove earth moving-plant and went on to join the electricity supply industry retiring in 1995. Mike and Margaret have owned several vessels over the years from Yachts to Motor Cruisers and still enjoy boating. They also have a touring caravan that they regularly use to tour France, Spain and Portugal. Mike’s book “Rivers, Canals And A Young Lad” is based on the years he worked on the rivers and canals of the UK. It was written at the suggestion of friends, who found his stories and anecdotes of the things he did, together with the characters he met during these times, very funny and interesting.
