I'm teaching myself Java and I'm not in the IT industry so the quality of the written material I can get my hands on is of utmost importance as I can't get day to day experience through work. My previous reading includes "Complete Java 2 Certification" (Roberts et al) and "A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification" (Mughal/Rasmussen) - both are books worthy of being in any person's library. I haven't passed the certification examination yet, but overall, I liked this book as a change to those that I have read before and which I felt compelled to mention. It's small, short, and written in an easy going style and is moderately priced. It presents the facts with the minimum amount of words. It means that the chapters are relatively short. There were times when reading the two books mentioned above, I felt that some chapters would never end! Ok, they are more in-depth books I know, but the brevity of this book makes you feel that the topics are manageable and the examination do-able. There were a number of times after reading a sentence or two, I sat back and said to myself "why couldn't anybody else have just said it like that?".

Now the bad news...I was prompted to write this review simply to tell people just how bad the practice examination software is that comes with the book - which is a real disappointment given that was my main reason for purchasing it. The standard of proof reading which must have taken place when this product was written is very poor.....sorry.

I've just closed down the application after attempting 26 out of 60 questions. In those few questions I attempted there were the usual simple typographical errors which I have come to expect from most software of this type. More worringly, and by way of example, there was a question which asked you to provide two answers but which only allowed you to choose from answers which had radio buttons whose operation limits you to choosing one answer only! Another question asked for three answers but the answer the software offered only provided two answers (which was what I had thought were the only two right answers). Here's another example: Which of the following are interfaces, not classes (Select three) a: SortedSet, b:Map, c:ArrayList, d:SortedMap. The software's answer? A,B,D. Ok, that's right, but the software's explanation? "Vector and ArrayList are concrete classes." Am I missing something - but where is Vector mentioned in the question? In addition, I'm not sure that the questions are hard enough compared to the exam proper, or that they contain enough code type questions like the exam proper does and there were questions which stated "select all correct answers" - my understanding from other sources is that now the exam tells you how many correct answers there are to each question.

Needless to say, when you know that the software is flawed, your confidence in it is undermined. My conclusion? The book could really work for you if you are tired of ploughing through some of the larger books on this topic and need something a little lighter and readable. The software? - I'm very unhappy.

A comedy of ERRORS 22 Feb 2002
By Robert Douglass - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Multiple authors with differing styles is OK. The information is mostly well presented and targeted for the exam. But the sample test questions are a disaster. They are awful. About 10% of the questions in the book and on the practice CD are woefully wrong. Examples abound and range from questions that don't list any correct answer as an option, due to a type-o (p. 211 #2), to questions on the software exam that say "select two" and then give radio buttons, thus making multiple selections impossible. If you are looking for a second or a third book to read to prepare for the exam, you'll be able to extract enough good from this to merit the purchase. Plus, debugging the [messed] up questions is good practice! But if you are looking for one book with which you hope to prepare, avoid this one. Much better is that from Roberts, Heller and Ernest (Also has some errors, but there is an errata list on the website). The folks at Osborne also have an errata page, which doesn't mention this book...
As series editor, blame must fall squarely on Mike Meyers, who says "I love every aspect of this book you hold in your hands". Next time, better look at all the aspects of a book before sending it to press.

Learn Java at the Programmer level in a friendly way. 29 Jan 2002
By "zendog" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I'm a Java instructor and I really like this book. It's succinct by nature with the ultimate goal of passing the Sun 310-025 certification exam. However, there are many surprises in this book for students learning Java without intending certification. For example, chapter 10 on "AWT2: Making the Screen Work," is the best single chapter I've found that progressively takes the reader through the event model and implementing listeners. If you're having trouble understanding anonymous inner class listeners, buy this book for that reason alone.

OK at best 3 Aug 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
What's Good:
1. Gives you good overview of what to expected on the exam.
2. Questions at the end of each chapter and their answers (not all answers are clear but overall it's acceptable).
3. Quick summary at the end of each chapter.

What's Bad:
1. Tons of errors. Just look at the book's webpage. The lack of professionalism on the publisher's part is quite evident. Let me put it this way, if I had know it had this much errors prior to purchasing this book, I wouldn't have purchased it.

2. Very weak in area's where explanation IS necessary. It really annoys the hell out of you after a while. This is definitely not a book for beginners, but even if you are an expert some statements in the book will make you say "huh, what the heck are they talking about?"
3. The accompanying CD is worthless! Just go to "JavaRanch.com/maha" for mock exams.

What's Ugly:
1. The book's index is just horrible! You can hardly find what you are looking for even though something pertaining to it is discussed in the book.
2. No glossary. What's an exam book without a glossary? The book make's it nearly impossible to do last minute check on things you don't fully comprehend. If the back of the book index was good the lack of a glossary would have been acceptable but it isn't.

I would recommend that you go to your local library and check it out rather than purchase it. You definitely shouldn't rely on this book alone to prepare you for the exam.
