Forgotten for a reason, 29 May 2007

This was to be Mike Heron's entry into the late seventies American pop market that had the misfortune of being released the same week that the label (Casablanca) that issued it declared bankrupcy. This glossy, over-produced album never had a chance. Instantly bound for the cut out bins, it never got promotion or airplay, this is his most removed from the ISB style that he ever released. The songs themselves aren't bad, indeed he has keep performing Mexican Girl and a couple of others but, the layer upon layer of slick studio sound tires the ear quickly. Producer Hugh Murphy had hit it big with Gerry Rafferty about that same time, but missed with Mike Heron. For the most rabid ISB/Mike Heron fans only.

And god knows I've tried a few times, because I like Mike Heron.
Mike Heron's earlier work with the Incredible String Band was vividly imagined, unconventional acoustic music, drawing on myriad musical styles and graced with intelligent, poetic lyrics. An intimate kind of British folk-art-pop that eluded cliché by dint of a certain obstinacy and artistry.
So..uh...Mike Heron on Casablanca records? Had he pulled it off, it would have been a really interesting career move. Witchy, sitar-infused dance floor burners? Hey, I'm so there! But, no. The gloss and banality of the production exhibit none of Heron's more interesting proclivities.
On the other hand, he has little to contribute to the kind of fun, poppy, r'n'b-influenced dance music tradition (i.e. 'disco') that Casablanca mined so well at its peak. His voice really isn't so great at being extrovert and loud, it becomes a bit nasal and he's not quite sure where to go with it.
Well, I'll probably keep taking it off the shelf every few years, still finding it hard to believe that there's absolutely nothing good on a Mike Heron album...but that seems to be the case.

great orchestrations and tunes, 22 Jan 2008

The arranging and songwriting here is wonderful and sophisticated and the lyrics are very provocative. The energy is a little tense, and the vocalizations are not intimate but rather shouted.
But for clean Heron material this is the collectible and slickest presentation and any Mike Heron fan should be grateful that this music has been preserved. It will only grow more precious with time and the tunes are lovely.
