This recording takes me back a long, long way because the last time I saw Mike Hart was at his twenty-first birthday party, back in 1963. Mike was my best mate at Birkenhead School and after school we'd hang around with the gang in Higher Bebington Park. Pete Mackey was one of the members and he and Mike eventually formed the Roadrunners, who feature on several tracks here.
Mike had real presence on stage and a strong, gravelly voice that belied his physical size. He also had an awe-inspiring intellect and evidence of that can be heard in some of the very thoughtful lyrics of his own compositions here.
Some people say he was a talent wasted, but at least Mike had talent, as this reissue makes abundantly plain and, in the end, what he chose to do with it was his business alone.
Listening to this, the distinctive voice of the kid I knew all those years ago still shines out, mesmerising and memorable. This is a must-have album for all who appreciate the Liverpool music scene of the nineteen-sixties.
