DVD Description

Following his moderate success as England boss, Mike wants one last chance of the big time after an otherwise undistinguished managerial career. He’s offered a job at Wirral County – a team his dad once played for – and believes he can resurrect the side, currently languishing as the bottom of their league.

Bassett has fallen on hard times since reaching the latter stages of the World Cup. He takes the post as the struggling Ellesmere Port-based side, much to the annoyance of Karine, played once again by Amanda Redman Steve Edge, who will be familiar to viewers thanks to Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights, joins the cast as Bassett’s coaching partner Doddsy.

Following on from his time as England manager, the story resumes with Mike Bassett as manager of Ellesmere Port's lowly Wirral County. The team is rubbish, Mike’s marriage is in trouble and then one night Tonka turns up..... with totally hilarious results. Ricky Tomlinson at his best -even if you don't like football you will enjoy this. Look out for Mike’s coaching partner Doddsy played by Steve Edge, his supporting role is a gem, highly recommended by this reviewer.

I don't want to oversell 'MB', and risk disappointing anyone, but actually this is a highly enjoyable and well-written comedy, full of sparkling footie-based humour. You certainly don't need to be a football fan to appreciate it, but if you do like your footie, it's even more enjoyable. Lot's of laugh-out-loud gags and a bit of an undiscovered gem really.

No subtitles 24 Aug 2011
By HH
I actually have no doubts that this is a great series, as I loved the movie. However there are no subtitles, at least not on my dvd, and as English is my third language (and not first) I actually had to give up as with their accents I didn't understand a word the actors said.
I know that this review is perhaps not fair on the dvd itself or the series - but I really think Amazon could do a lot better in saying in the product info page whether a dvd is subtitled - and no doubt this could cause trouble for more people than just myself.
