Book Description

21 Sep 2010 Dark Horse Archives
In a radioactive, nuclear-ravaged future, Samson is born into a tribe of peaceful yet desperate people struggling to survive in the desolate city of N'Yark. Surrounded by hungry, wild creatures - creatively mutated and brought to life by Thorne and subsequent artists - and the more savage, selfish remnants of humanity, life is precarious at best for the tribe until Samson displays amazing powers. Discovering that young Samson is a mutant himself, his mother trains Samson to value life, and on her deathbed Samson vows "to protect the weak from the powerful, the good from the evil!" After being mauled by a vicious beast, Samson is later nursed to health by the beautiful Sharmaine, and he joins her and her scientist father, Mindor, in trying to unveil the powerful secrets of their past while surviving in a future filled with ridiculously transformed animals and hostile barbarians. Want a little Herbie with your Mad Max? These apocalyptic tales have more than a little humor mixed in with their themes of destruction and human folly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mighty good 20 Feb 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Mighty Samson was never one of the greatest comics of the 1960s but this is still a fun, entertaining read. Gold Key comics were never as in your face as Marvel, or as smooth as DC, but they were a pleasant, absorbing alternative.

Most of the science of Mighty Samson is out of whack, the scripts are unashamedly children's fare, and the artwork takes time to develop into Frank Thorne's distinct style but if you just want a fun read, or you're a collector of Thorne's work this is for you.

I really liked the paper stock too. A matt, pulpier type as opposed to glossy. Reminded me of those UK Top Sellers comics of the 1970s (if you remember them), which is appropriate as Top Sellers reprinted a lot of Gold Key comics back then.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another masterpiece archive from Dark Horse 25 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover
Dark Horse continue to bring out superb Gold Key archives. Mighty Samson has all but been forgotten (though DH are also re-launching the character in December 2010) but definitely doesn't deserve to be forgotten. Set in a post Apocalypse world the stories are all generally enjoyable (but very daft) as well as inventive. Most of the stories revolve around the discovery (conveniently for plot purposes) of a piece of ancient technology as well as some really oddball mutant creatures and characters. The stories don't really progress (hopefully this won't be the case in the new versions) but they are fun comics. Classic tales.

4.0 out of 5 stars POST-APOCALYPTIC HEROICS 23 Oct 2010
By Charlie Gee - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Dark Horse continues its run of archive editions of Gold Key comics from the 60s with this volume of MIGHTY SAMPSON stories (intended to be a four-volume set to encompass the comic's 32-issue run). The storyline is simple: Sampson, given great strength through the effects of radiation, vows to use his power to protect the weak and the oppressed. Joining him on his adventures is the beautiful Sharmaine and her scientist father Mindor. Together they fight to survive in a ruined New York ravaged ages ago by nuclear war. The stories are simple, straightforward, and loaded with action. The artwork, although not the best I've ever seen, fits the simplistic nature of the tales. The monsters, which are everywhere, are fun to look at and the use of famous New York landmarks helps the reader to feel at "home" in this strange, new world. The coloring is very good. The front and back covers of each issue are presented full-size and are well done.

Unlike earlier Dark Horse comic archives, this book is printed on stock hardcover paper instead of glossy. This gives the book a true comic feel and eliminates the glare that sometimes happens with the glossy paper. It's well-produced with a nice introduction by comic book creator and scholar Dylan Williams.

I'm confident that fans who read these comics when they were originally released will be very happy with this archive edition. The heroics of Sampson certainly require a suspension of logic at times, but this, after all, is a comic book. Clearly the stories are targeted to a younger audience, which makes for some wholesome reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff 24 Sep 2012

It has been a wonderful journey down memory lane for me. To read the Mighty Samson comics and purview the illustrations have brought me back to my fond memories of childhood and the experience of the simplicity of comic books, which always brought me comfort and pleasure! The illustrations are unique and classic. The writing is campy and entertaining. Everything I wanted in a blast of nostalgia.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great Nostalgia 30 Nov 2012

I remember reading some of the odd issues of Mighty Samson. Although most of these issues can be read as stand-alone, this collected archives book puts some of these stories into a narrative arc, thus putting into context some of the plots and the recurring baddies in latter issues. Recommended for pure nostalgia.
