5.0 out of 5 stars A Mighty fine movie gem! 8 Aug 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Good movies come and go. Some films which fail to gather interest at the cinema have a new lease of life on video. The Mighty is one such film. It stars Sharon Stone as the mother of 13- year- old Kevin (Kierin Culkin). Kevin moves in next door to troubled teen Max (Elden Henson). The two boys both have problems which makes them outcasts at school and in the local community. But, united together they set out to face the emotional and physical bullies of the world by setting off on a series of adventures. Along the way they find that two can become one and that they can overcome other people's perceptions of them and fight back in a way that they could not have imagined.

The Mighty is one of those exceptional movies that creeps up on you and does not let go. An emotional but always amusing tale, it lifts the spirits and is the better film for dealing with the issues in a cinematic way rather than resembling a Channel 5 TV Movie!

Sharon Stone gives a tour de force performance which proves that there is more to this actress than Basic Instinct. Gillian Anderson also gives a great performance in a quirky but likeable role as one of the many characters that Kevin and Max meet on their travels. The two young actors, McCulkin and Henson prove that not all American child actors are annoying!

The Mighty will move you, lift you and take you to a place that you hoped you could revisit: school. It then gives you the chance to see two young lads combat and deal with their bullies. This should be shown in schools everywhere.

Mightier than a sword!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical 9 Mar 2007
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a superb film that, inexplicably, is not well known.

A gentle giant of a boy who has been almost irrevocably damaged by terrible events in his childhood is brought back to life by a small disabled boy.

This disabled boy is given a chance to see the world - and live in his own world with this huge companion.

It is funny, sweet and very emotional - but never in a contrived manner.

How it didn't get an Oscar - or Elden Henson (the actor who plays Max Kane) didn't get an Oscar I'll never understand.

See it - and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars a gem of a film 6 April 2006
Format:VHS Tape
I agree with all the other reviewers. There is something so inexplicably charming about this movie that makes it most unforgettable. The acting by Henson and Culkin are sincere- with Sharon Stone and Gillian Anderson as great supporting characters. The theme of Arthurian knights is a nice touch on this excellent story. I'm saddened by the fact that this movie did not do as well at the box office. However I don't believe for a moment that the financial earning of a film is a mark of its excellence.

4.0 out of 5 stars A mighty good film 10 Feb 2003
Format:DVD
I love this film. Kieron Kulkin pllays the disabled child of a devoted Sharon Stone who finds his growing inability to move around has little restriction on his brilliant mind. As luck would have it he and his Mom move in next to Max and his grand-parents. Max's mother had been murdered by his father who has been imprisoned for the crime. Unsurprisingly Max is heavily burdened with the resultant emotional baggage and finds school, and reading in particular a bind. In contrast to Kulkin's character (unkindly labelled as "freak" by his peers) Max has the body of a rugby prop forward with which to cart around his frazzled ego. The two form an unlikely parnership, and together perform chivallrous acts while fantasising over the Arthurian legends that Freak reads to Max. A bit of a tearjerker, but all in all a grat example of how by helping one-another we can overcome our shortcomings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting story about the value of friendship 28 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Format:DVD
The Mighty is a fantastic and touching movie that all ages can enjoy. It deals with the friendship of two outcast boys who are quite the opposite of each other, Kevin (Kieran Culkin) is handicapped with a degenerative bone disorder, but clever and quick at inventing things while Max (Eldon Ratliff) is a slow learner and big for his age, who lives with his grandparents. Both learn from each other the importance of friendship and the values of honor, bravery, helping others, and accepting yourself. The cast works really well in all the roles, and all of the acting is very good (especially from the young actors). Sharon Stone surprised me in that she played the role of Kevin's mother well. The end of this movie was so sad despite being a bit predictable, but I thought it was beautifully done although I wished it ended differently, but then I realize how it completes the story. All in all, I found this movie really enjoyable in every way. The characters are endearing, the music is touching and the story is at times humorous yet very touching. The Mighty proves to be a heart-warming movie about friendship and life. Definitely a must-see!
