Review

'Buchan knew that you can't buck the consequences of your actions, and that your life is what you make of it. Perhaps his peculiarly Scottish combination of Romanticism and Calvinism - daring living and high thinking - is due to return to fashion.' - The Independent Magazine

About the Author

One of Alfred Hitchcock's favourite writers, John Buchan was a Scottish diplomat, barrister, journalist, historian, poet and novelist. He published nearly 30 novels and seven collections of short stories. He was born in Perth, an eldest son, and studied at Glasgow and Oxford. In 1901 he became a barrister of the Middle Temple and a private secretary to the High Commissioner for South Africa. In 1907 he married Susan Charlotte Grosvenor and they subsequently had four children. After spells as a war correspondent, Lloyd George's Director of Information and Conservative MP, Buchan moved to Canada in 1935. He served as Governor General there until his death in 1940.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good historical adventure 5 Dec 2002
By John
Format:Paperback
A good historical adventure with the main character coming into contact with 18th century underground Britain during his travels.

The characterisation and the authors painting of the landscapes are particularly well done, which allows the reader to become unknowingly immersed in the story.

I rate Midwinter higher than the authors better known novel, The Thirty-Nine Steps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a great read 9 Aug 2007
Format:Paperback
I first read this book when I was about 10 and thrillled to it without wholly understanding it. It's one of those books you can return to again and again - and I do - and you're never disappointed. It's about an England which we would like to believe existed, with the best secret society ever! A little knowledge of Samuel Johnson helps the enjoyment, but isn't a necessity. In my opinion Buchan's historical novels are generally better than the Hannays and Liethens. If you enjoy this try tracking down "The Free Fishers" and "The Blanket Of The Dark".
