Format: DVD
Midway is very much from the last-gasp of big-screen spot-the-star epics, and it shows. On paper it's an impressive cast - Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, Glenn Ford, Robert Mitchum, James Coburn, Cliff Robertson, Robert Wagner, Toshiro Mifune, James Shigeta - but aside from Heston, Fonda and Hal Holbrook, few of them have much to do: Mitchum only has one scene. Much of the first third of the film is taken up with either gathering intelligence while Heston tries not very hard to get estranged son Edward Albert's Japanese-American wife out of internment (this section was even longer, with a subplot with Heston's wife removed from all but the US TV prints: parts of it can be found in this disc's deleted scenes).

Things don't improve much when battle is finally joined and it becomes clear that aside from the odd scene on the deck of an aircraft carrier, the new footage is mainly men in control rooms or cockpits intercut less than convincingly with stock footage from Tora! Tora! Tora! and real color footage of the battle. Unfortunately, blown up to widescreen they often look jarringly grainy, constantly drawing attention to how much of a cut-and-paste the film is. In many ways, despite the widescreen and Senssurround trappings of its theatrical release, this 1976 film often looks like something you'd have expected to be made during the war or perhaps something that started life as an intended TV miniseries: watchable enough without ever really threatening to become truly memorable.

Despite this, it was still surprisingly commercially successful at the US box-office - but then, unlike Tora! Tora! Tora!, the good guys won this particular battle. The DVD is of the two hour theatrical version, but comes loaded with plenty of additional features - 4 deleted scenes and extended ending, a 38-minute making of documentary, featurettes on John Williams' score and the sound effects, the original ten-minute making of short from 1976, stills montage and trailer.

The film "Battle of Midway" is one of the many classic war films showing desperation, courage and tactics winning over numerical advantage. The film also has many, fantastic aerial dogfight sceens, is historically acurate, and where possible, original footage from the Pacific war theatre is used to give the film a sense of authenticity. The all-star cast makes the film a classic, and makes the characters roles easily accessable to the watcher. Some of the film is repeated , and some of the aircraft in the original film segments are not those seen on the film set, but a slight inacuracy is a small price to pay for the high standard of the rest of the film. The film also gives a fair view of both the sides who are fighting, and this is good as it makes analysing the film from both sides easy, and does justice to both the commanders and men on both sides whatever thier nationallity. This film has suspense from beginning to end, and action is never far off. Even the titles are more than just names. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and recommend it!

THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY moves a little faster than TORA, TORA, TORA and is only slightly shorter. It will be entertaining for those who are intersted in World WarII and the crucial Battle of Midway which is really more of an air battle than it is a good old-fashioned naval battle. The strong cast is led by Henry Fonda and Charlton Heston and includes James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Robert Mitchum, Toshiro Mifune and James Shigeta.
MIDWAY failed to receive any Oscar Nominations in 1976 when the Academy Award competition was dominated by ROCKY and NETWORK.

This review is about the actual PRODUCT, not the film.

I was thrilled with this Blu-ray release for one particular reason: throughout the film, there are captions embedded on the screen to identify key figures and ships as they appear. This was how the film was originally shown in cinemas and on television. However, the DVD releases of "Midway" both in the UK and the USA elected to remove this valuable information, which made viewing the film difficult for someone trying to follow the complexity of the battles.
The picture quality is what you would expect for a 1976 film transferred to Hi-Definition. It's not perfect but it's a very good improvement over the DVD. The night-time shots are a little fuzzy, but the indoor/daytime shots are pretty good picture quality.

The film is a classic from the 1970s the blue ray does it
justice and in some parts it's Crystal clear but there is a down fall
to this .and this is because the film is made up of stock
Footage of the other film tora tora tora ,and ex documentary films of the
Pacific theatre alas the picture for these scenes are grainy at best .the casting
is superb Glenn Ford is a favourite actor of mine and also starred
Charlton Heston, robert Mitcham and Henry Fonda ,this was the second
Time Henry Fonda played admiral nimitz ,the other time in John waynes
In harm's way. Top billing from Japan's actors and showed the battle
From their perspective .as pointed out in history it's one of the naval battles
That neither sides ships came into contact with each other.
