This is a very beautiful film, which captures the magical atmosphere of Shakespeare's play far better than any of the more recent versions. The only thing that lets it down is the sound, which is old and crackly. It seems a pity that the recording of Mendelssohn's beautiful music could not have been restored--ideally, replaced with a new performance played by a modern orchestra. It is regrettable that the stunning visual images have to be accompanied with music that sounds as if it is played on an old and badly damaged 78 shellac disc.

This is a wonderful production of MSND showing some of the well known actors and actresses in their younger days. James Cagney plays Bottom just as he does with most of his more influencial characters. Micky Roonie must have been about 11 or 12 when he starred at the mischievious puck.

Only down side is clearly some of the script has been edited out for the sake of Television. But that shouldn't spoil the films enjoyment.

This film, a collaboration between Max Reinhardt & William Dieterle is an absolute delight and it's difficult to believe it's almost 80 years old.

Korngold gives a nice nudge - albeit a small one - to Mendelssohn's superlative music and the ballet and especially the flying sequences are expertly handled.

All of the cast acquit themselves well but I believe acting honours go to the King and the Queen of the fairies - Anita Louise is a suitably seductive Titania ("What! Jealous, Oberon?") and Victor Jory, best known in his role as Jonas Wilkerson, the white-trash overseer in `Gone with the Wind' is superb as a bombastic and manipulative Oberon ("Ill met by moonlight - proud Titania!").

An enchanting film.

The product was exactly what it said it would be. What you see is what you get. Who could ask for more?
