Product Description

Another case for Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby (John Nettles) and Detective Constable Ben Jones (Jason Hughes). The village of Midsomer Magna is devastated by the closure of the King's Crystal glassware factory. The closure comes after the seemingly accidental death of co-owner Alan King (David Firth). The factory workers are left jobless and, left with no financial security, begin to rail against accountant Peter Baxter (Ray Lonnen) and remaining co-owner Charles King (John Castle) about their redundancies. When Baxter's body is found in the water meadows, stabbed to death with a Masonic dagger, Jones suggests suicide, but pathologist Dr Bullard (Barry Jackson) and Barnaby suspect foul play.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's not always a Freemason to blame 11 Feb 2011
Format:DVD
Perhaps the best TV crime series in this part of the Century. In this dirty and perverted society it is really fresh and wonderful to see the England that used to be. Good old detective work with a fine cast. Sad to see that the Masonic World is dragged through the mud again which gives a false impression as the culprit is not a Freemason. But nontheless a good story, well acted and one of the best in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare comes to Midsomer 18 Jun 2009
Format:DVD
This episode of Midsomer Murders concerns an ailing glass factory, and is a rather weak modern retelling of Hamlet. Not an original idea, it had already been done better in the pilot episode of Lewis. Not one of the best episodes of this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hamlet in Midsomer 30 Nov 2009
Format:DVD
If you love Shakespeare in general and are familiar with Hamlet but have not seen this Midsomer episode do not read beyond the next sentence, get the episode and enjoy a brilliant Hamlet pastiche. The joke in my opinion is to find out all the Hamlet similarities. (stop reading now if you do not want me to give the plot way.
Here is my list
1. The obvious one, the family name is King
2. Basic story father dies, mother remarries within short uncle, son is distraught.
3. Father was actually murdered by uncle (Claudius kills Hamlet Sr.)
4. Hamlet (Ian) tries to discover the truth
5. Hamlet (Ian) kills Polonius (Peter Baxter) almost by accident
6. Hamlet (Ian) has a nunnery scene with Ophelia (Sophie)
7. Ophelia (Sophie) does not die but goes away 2/3 within the episode, and for all we care she could be dead
8. There is a play within the play scene where the truth strikes Barnaby (the play is of course Hamlet)
9. There is an Horatio (David) who sees everything but is not really part of the action
10. There is even a Laertes (James)
11. Jones plays Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern packaged in one
12. The truth comes from beyond the grave, not a ghost but a late autopsy
13. And of course Claudius (Charles) is the bad guy
There may be more, in any case have fun... The only bad news (or good as it is the exception in the series) is that we know who the bad guy is!
