From Amazon.co.uk

Based on Caroline Graham's novels and featuring the stolid crime-solving skills of Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby, Midsomer Murders made their television debut in 1997 and continue to keep viewers happy with that potent whodunnit ingredient: spectacularly bloody murders in the most tranquil rural settings the Shires have to offer. Midsomer is a vaguely defined area of villages and hamlets with charming names like Badger's Drift and Goodman's Land. It also has the highest number of violent deaths per capita outside the average war zone. Serial killings abound to test the nerve of Barnaby (John Nettles) and his sidekick Sergeant Troy (Daniel Casey), a dullard easily perplexed by a world which refuses to stick to his black and white view of things.

Nettles is excellent; there's a hint of Bergerac still, now heavier of jowl and broader of beam, though the chasing is necessarily limited and the DCI enjoys the home comforts of an understanding wife and a spirited daughter. "Every time I go into any Midsomer village, it's always the same thing", he huffs. "Blackmail, sexual deviancy, suicide and murder." Ain't it the truth? The murders are astonishing. Family feuds, jealousy, incest, industrial espionage, all erupt at regular intervals leaving a trail of bodies with throats slashed, limbs dismembered and blood absolutely everywhere. Rivers of sheer nastiness run deep beneath the superficially pastoral perfection of Midsomer. Thank goodness there are still men like dependable Barnaby to get to the bottom of things. Eventually.

Sure of Barnaby’s eventual success, Midsomer Murders make for a cosy, even comforting, couple of hours curled up in front of the television. And they make a great showcase for star turns from the great stable of British character actors, too, from Celia Imrie and Elizabeth Spriggs to Imelda Staunton and Duncan Preston, who invariably turn this whimsical stuff into the tastiest possible ham.--Piers Ford

5.0 out of 5 stars Midsomer Class 9 May 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
If you are a budding teenager, (like I am) or an adult, who wants to relax on a Saturday night with a mystery to get your teeth into, then buy, "The Killings at Badgers Drift". It is in my opinion one of the best Midsomer Murders and it is not a boring pointless plot that doesn't explain everything. It's got a good and understandable plot with a clever twist.A typical but good British murder mystery, naturally consisting of 10 or so Characters, a few murders and one of them is the murderer. It has a powerful but twisted outcome. A brilliant contrast of characters. Iris Rainbird and her undertaker son, Dennis.(strange people!), The nice old lady, Emily Simpson, Catherine and Michael lacey, brother and sister and Phyllis Caddel, still mourning her dead sister. And many more. It is a village full of MANY secrets. If you are a Midsomer Murders fan like me and you can't choose which episode to buy, pick this one.(I did) It's Brilliant and if you watch it over and over again I bet you'll find a new bit of information you didn't know the first time!

4.0 out of 5 stars Underated Murder Mysteries Come To DVD 16 May 2002
By A Customer
Format:DVD
It's good to see the adventures of John Nettles' Inspector Barnaby finally come to DVD. Taken from the first series 'Death of a hollow man' is one of the strongest episodes in the series history.
Full of memorable characters played by some of this countrys finest actors and with one memorable murder inflicted by the victim as he performs on stage.
The story is set around a amateur production of 'Amadeus' at the Causton Playhouse. But the cast, who includes the Inspector's wife Joyce, soon discover that someone is more interested in murder than showbusiness.
John Nettles returned to television after concentrating on his stage career and fits the part of Barnaby perfectly. He is paired with the accomplished young actor Daniel Casey who makes an admirable foil to his bosses ideas.
Well worth buying if you're a fan of the classic English murder mystery.

4.0 out of 5 stars A worthy addition to the Midsomer Murders series 23 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Although not the best episode of the series (Death's Shadow gets my vote for that accolade), Dark Autumn makes for a good evening's entertainment and is a must for fans of the Midsomer Murders series. The story centres on a randy postman intent on delivering more than just the mail to the local female population, who quickly has his head chopped off for his efforts. Barnaby and Troy are put on the case, with Troy quickly falling for the local WPC, a dishy dark-haired beauty who has a few dark secrets of her own. What I liked more than anything in Dark Autumn was the creepy big band music that accompanied each murder - nice touch, guys. It sends a shiver down your back every time you hear it. As far as the "whodunnit" aspect of this episode is concerned, you'll have absolutely no idea who did it, but in my opinion neither would Miss Marple or Poirot in this case either (and even Barnaby is pushed), as the murderer's motive is a bit obscure to say the least. Nevertheless I enjoyed it - long live Midsomer Murders!

This five disk set contains four Midsomer Murders which were all originally broadcast during the Christmas period. Also included is the Super Sluths documentary which features interviews with cast and crew as well as Caroline Graham who originally wrote the Inspector Barnaby books. This documentary is only available on the Amazon exclusive release and is well worth paying a few pounds more for.

The selection of episodes is excellent and includes one of my all time favourites Death Of A Stranger. The other episodes are A Talent For Life, Ghosts Of Christmas Past and Shot At Dawn. Guest stars in these episodes include James Bolam (New Tricks), George Cole (Minder), Richard Johnson (Zombie Flesh Eaters) and many more.

All four stories are of the usual high standard we have come to expect in Midsomer Murders. This set is well worth adding to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars written in blood review by chris shelton 16 Jun 2001

Format:VHS Tape
I think that this is the best midsomer murders episode to date. The reason being is the great suspense littered throughout the story. As soon as the murder takes place you find out that anyone could be the killer. In this John Nettles fans are seeing him at his best as he tells the audience who did the murder Why and When with some brilliant dialogue. This is my personal favourite episode to date. The story starts as a flashback to Durrow, southern Ireland In 1955.In a house someone takes out a gun and shoots a man lying in bed.The scene then changes to present day.The Midsomer worthy writers circle has decided to Invite author Max Jennings to one of there meetings. One of the writers seems to have a problem with him coming to the meeting. The next day after the meeting the same writer is found dead after being battered to death with a candlestick.DCI Barnaby discovers that the writer is a man of mystery and when another body is found Barnaby must solve 2 murders wich he is preety certain are linked. If you love mystery and suspense stories this is definitely a must see episode of Midsomer Murders for you to enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent programme 5 Jan 2006

What can I say. But this is excellent. You will be at the edge of your seat. The one you think could be the murderer actually is not. Lots of twists and red herrings. A must for all fans.

I love watching Midsomer Murders but I have to say it's not one of the better episodes. The story is rather dull and predictable which is unusual for Midsomer Murders. The cast however, is excellent and I can't fault anyones performances - it's the story thats the problem. Out of the entire series there are only a few episodes which I did not enjoy.

Now the series is being released in very nice box sets each containing 10 episodes. However, for some strange reason this story has not been released on any of the collections. This is very annoying because now anyone who buys the box set will have an incomplete set or will have to buy this dvd on its own. A real shame.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1st and best episode
Great story, lots of editorial errors (I counted 7 last time I watched it), but who cares? No one would notice them if you watch it only once. The cast and acting is first rate.
