Amazon.co.uk Review

Based on Caroline Graham's novels and featuring the stolid crime-solving skills of Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby, Midsomer Murders made their television debut in 1997 and continue to keep viewers happy with that potent whodunnit ingredient: spectacularly bloody murders in the most tranquil rural settings the Shires have to offer. Midsomer is a vaguely defined area of villages and hamlets with charming names like Badger's Drift and Goodman's Land. It also has the highest number of violent deaths per capita outside the average war zone. Serial killings abound to test the nerve of Barnaby (John Nettles) and his sidekick Sergeant Troy (Daniel Casey), a dullard easily perplexed by a world which refuses to stick to his black and white view of things.

Nettles is excellent; there's a hint of Bergerac still, now heavier of jowl and broader of beam, though the chasing is necessarily limited and the DCI enjoys the home comforts of an understanding wife and a spirited daughter. "Every time I go into any Midsomer village, it's always the same thing", he huffs. "Blackmail, sexual deviancy, suicide and murder." Ain't it the truth? The murders are astonishing. Family feuds, jealousy, incest, industrial espionage, all erupt at regular intervals leaving a trail of bodies with throats slashed, limbs dismembered and blood absolutely everywhere. Rivers of sheer nastiness run deep beneath the superficially pastoral perfection of Midsomer. Thank goodness there are still men like dependable Barnaby to get to the bottom of things. Eventually.

Sure of Barnaby’s eventual success, Midsomer Murders make for a cosy, even comforting, couple of hours curled up in front of the television. And they make a great showcase for star turns from the great stable of British character actors, too, from Celia Imrie and Elizabeth Spriggs to Imelda Staunton and Duncan Preston, who invariably turn this whimsical stuff into the tastiest possible ham.--Piers Ford

Enjoyable and fun 22 Mar 2003
Format:VHS Tape
The story is placed in a commune of strange and eccentric characters. The leader is a criminal who began the commune with a partner as a scam but came to believe the things he preached to his eccentric followers. Beginning with the partner, one person after another dies. Poor Inspector Barnaby is so frustrated with the people and John Nettles brings off this part of the character of Inspector Barnaby with humor and I couldn't help but feeling sorry for him. It's kind of good that he gets frustrated occasionally. He picks on Troy often enough.

Every alternative approach to life and more awaits Barnaby and Troy whilst they try and seperate the cool hard facts from the ether in this superb who dunnit. Faced with a group firmly believing in an alternative afterlife, they must approach with caution. Red herrings and side tracks galore lead the reader towards a superb finale. Great stuff in the true tradition of the crime reader, with the unique approach to humour that is the trade mark of Caroline Graham. Well recommended.

How are bees in a storm Ken? 22 Aug 2008
By bernie - Published on Amazon.com
In the shade of the Lodge of the Golden Wind Hoarse we find that a dispute between the founders William Carter (Robert Pickavance) and Ian Craigie (Michael Feast) the founders are having a dispute as to wither to cash and run or build on a new way of life.

The dispute may have turned into something nasty except for an accidental fall and a broken neck. Later people begin to wonder if it was an accident as later someone is almost flattened by a stone ball.

We are introduce to a lot of obscure characters and are in for a regression, Gaius Quintus (Judy Cornwell.) Added to the group is a gripy old but very rich curmudgeon Guy Gamelin (Miles Anderson.) He is upset to find that his daughter taken in to the Loge is about to donate 3 million quid to a bunch of nutters.

D.C.I. Barnaby (John Nettles) with his trusty sidekick Detective Sergeant Troy (Daniel Casey,) must determine if it is murder or an accident and if he does not hurry there maybe another demise or two.

And is Christopher Wainwright (Stephen Moyer) the photographer who covered the war in Rwanda harboring a dark secret. Do not over look Ken and Heather Beavers.

You will need to watch this several times to get all the nuances.
