Product Description

Ben leaves a happy ship, the Faithful, to join a most unhappy ship, the Hawk, under Captain Sharp who is suffering from syphilis but will not admit it. Ben, who is only 15, is asked to serve as acting surgeon’s mate on a ship with no surgeon. He is faced with ‘lubbers’, an alcoholic second lieutenant, an insane midshipman and tropical fevers. He is shanghaied aboard a slaver, escapes and later is taken with ten of his crew aboard a Spanish pirate ship. He manages to capture the pirate ship and her two foreign prizes and brings them into port at Barbados with a crew of only ten men, expecting to be blown out of the water. Besides saving the lives of men afflicted with fevers, he must serve as senior officer on a ship that is sinking and has a crew of Spaniards who are fever-ridden. He is crucified during a court martial for loss of the ship by one man who is destined to play an important role in his life. He manages to pass the lieutenant’s exam on his second try. Volume 2 of 9 in The Rundel Series.

The facts in this book appear to be historically accurate but the characterisation is very simple and the harshness of the time is skimmed over. However for someone who is interested in the Napoleonic War it gives a very readable way of revisiting the early stages of the conflict. Rundel is not a Hornblower or an Aubrey but his adventures make good reading.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sadly deficient 29 Jun. 2014

One of a series that I wish I hadn't bought. It is a very poor constituent to the canon of British Nelsonian Navy stories. Most are well written and true to the times they portray. This author seems not to understand what is required.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent storyline. 15 Jun. 2014

This book builds on an excellent first volume filling out the main character and then delivers a first rate and well researched story of sea life in the 18th century.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worthy of a read. 14 Jun. 2014

Sufficiently enjoyable to stay with it. At times it felt unduly tame. This gave rise to thoughts about the possibility that it was written for children. But on balance I don't think that could be so. Some of the narrative was very unrealistic. A midshipman particularly as young as a Rundle would not relate to his subordinates in that manner. Nor would a Captain, or senior officer, seek 15/16 year old Midshipman about Anything. I am set to follow through on the series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Midshipman Rundel 4 April 2014

The book makes light reading, but the author seems to have a very poor memory. He has Midshipman Rundel passing his cat in a cage down into the boat in one sentence then in the next the cat was on his shoulder whilst he got into the boat.
He should have done more research on British history.
I do however find it amazing that a young man can have done so much by the age of 16.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling read 15 Mar. 2014

This book is a good read to anyone who is interested inNaval history. The explanations of anchoring short handed are well written especially to anyone who has tried it. The story itself is very far fetched, but one problem or adventure after another is what makes you reluctant to put it down.
