A great collection, 18 May 2004

I picked up this book after a recommendation from a friend and from the first story on I was hooked. I read the whole book in one day. It is that good. Mr. McCrann's stories are suspenseful, edgy, splashed with black humor and excellent characterizations. It reminded me of some of Stephen King's earlier works. My favorites were "The Wail of the Banshee" in which an elderly woman puts up with an abusive husband, "What needs doing will get done", the points a father will take to make his young son happy, "Close your eyes Sweet Angel", a gripping story that really moved me, and "The Lizard's Tale", probably my favorite out of all for its unexpected ending. This is a must for anyone who enjoys horror and suspense. Highly recommended.

Midnight Tableau...Best writing I've Seen In A Long Time!, 15 Jun 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

I have recently attained a copy of Midnight Tableau written by Mike McCrann. I was looking through the bookstore and loved the cover! I then looked at the back, read what the book was about and thought I'd give it a chance.
Well, as chances go...I made a great choice! A couple of the stories seemed, well...unfinished. Such as "The Rubbish Man" and "Down The Cellar." Both had me questioning and wondering why? I've never read a more intriguing book in my life. I like the unanswered questions as it allows you (the reader) to guess. I'm not sure that Mr. McCrann will ever answer these questions, but I hope he doesn't. These stories will keep you on your feet.
One story I did relate to all too well was "The Wail Of The Banshee." Spousal abuse at it's finest, or worst...depending on how you look at it. And the end? Well, read it to find out. I'm not telling.
All I WILL tell you is this is a book for all types of readers. Subject matter is not a problem here. There's suspense, thrills, chills and even a "fairy tale" of sorts. Don't ask me which, I'm STILL not telling. ;-)
I recommend "Midnight Tableau" to anyone with imagination. Anyone who likes a good mystery and those who just want a chill running down their spines.

A Great Read!!!, 14 Jun 2005

I don't know what else I can possibly say...Everyone else's reviews seem to nail it in the head. The thing I agree with most is how the characters in each story are so vivid - it really sucks you right into the book as if you were really there. I'm so glad these were short stories because I tend to have trouble putting down a really good book(as is the case here)...so I'd be up all night long trying to finish it!! These are just the right length to read a story a night (or if you're like me, several a night!!). I'm definitely looking forward to his next book!!
