Product Description

Synopsis

Whether it's a young man trapped beneath the sea in the belly of an iron behemoth or an old women trapped within the confines of an abusive marriage, Michael McCrann paints dramatic portraits of people in unpleasant situations. Sometimes they're good people, sometimes they're not-so-good, but always the characters that inhabit these dark worlds are fleshed-out in remarkably vivid dimensions. The twelve tales of dark fiction contained in Midnight Tableau are sophisticated, character-driven, and crafted for a discerning adult readership. The stories include; Lured, La Arana Afortunada, Forever Isabella, What Needs Doing Will Get Done, Awake, Down the Cellar, The Rubbish Man, The Pledge, The Wail of the Banshee, The Lizard's Tale, Close Your Eyes, Sweet Angel and the novella, Coven of the Unwanted. Each of the settings - from the exotic to the commonplace - are more than mere backdrops. They are carefully fashioned to lure the reader into the fictional nightmare. The plots are filled with thrills and twists. The malevolent forces within range from creepy-crawlies and viscous garden gnomes to more esoteric antagonists like an evil little secret from the past.

But, ultimately, it will be the people - the predators as well as the prey - that remain to skulk in the mind for some time to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, 23 July 2004

This is an outstanding debut from a true horror aficionado.McCrann's simple, elegant prose draws in the audience and prepares them for a ride. His approach to character development seizes the imagination, and his talent is undeniable. Shunning the 'normal' guidelines of 21st century horror, McCrann focuses on the human elememt of each short story, and as such, these characters live in well past midnight.
I can personally guarantee that you will not find a new author in this genre to beat Michael McCrann. Midnight Tableau. Read it. You will not be disappointed.

Midnight Tableau is a must. Mike is a new writer and obviously relatively unheard of, but the guy is a genius. Please buy this book and I will assure you that you will be desperate to get more of his works.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great collection, 18 May 2004
By An Amazon.com reader - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Midnight Tableau (Paperback)
I picked up this book after a recommendation from a friend and from the first story on I was hooked. I read the whole book in one day. It is that good. Mr. McCrann's stories are suspenseful, edgy, splashed with black humor and excellent characterizations. It reminded me of some of Stephen King's earlier works. My favorites were "The Wail of the Banshee" in which an elderly woman puts up with an abusive husband, "What needs doing will get done", the points a father will take to make his young son happy, "Close your eyes Sweet Angel", a gripping story that really moved me, and "The Lizard's Tale", probably my favorite out of all for its unexpected ending. This is a must for anyone who enjoys horror and suspense. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Midnight Tableau...Best writing I've Seen In A Long Time!, 15 Jun 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Midnight Tableau (Paperback)
I have recently attained a copy of Midnight Tableau written by Mike McCrann. I was looking through the bookstore and loved the cover! I then looked at the back, read what the book was about and thought I'd give it a chance.
Well, as chances go...I made a great choice! A couple of the stories seemed, well...unfinished. Such as "The Rubbish Man" and "Down The Cellar." Both had me questioning and wondering why? I've never read a more intriguing book in my life. I like the unanswered questions as it allows you (the reader) to guess. I'm not sure that Mr. McCrann will ever answer these questions, but I hope he doesn't. These stories will keep you on your feet.
One story I did relate to all too well was "The Wail Of The Banshee." Spousal abuse at it's finest, or worst...depending on how you look at it. And the end? Well, read it to find out. I'm not telling.
All I WILL tell you is this is a book for all types of readers. Subject matter is not a problem here. There's suspense, thrills, chills and even a "fairy tale" of sorts. Don't ask me which, I'm STILL not telling. ;-)
I recommend "Midnight Tableau" to anyone with imagination. Anyone who likes a good mystery and those who just want a chill running down their spines.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read!!!, 14 Jun 2005
By Jen Dorsey - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Midnight Tableau (Paperback)
I don't know what else I can possibly say...Everyone else's reviews seem to nail it in the head. The thing I agree with most is how the characters in each story are so vivid - it really sucks you right into the book as if you were really there. I'm so glad these were short stories because I tend to have trouble putting down a really good book(as is the case here)...so I'd be up all night long trying to finish it!! These are just the right length to read a story a night (or if you're like me, several a night!!). I'm definitely looking forward to his next book!!
