PERFECT! 15 July 2007
By Mark53
Format:Audio CD
Right from the great cover to one of the most awesome and original guitar solo's on the almost side long 'livin' on the hill' this is what makes earlier Seventies scandinavian music so good. Along with the excellant burnin' red Ivanhoe and the truely unique Day of Pheonix this is one album i really couldn't do without. The musicianship is stunning and for once the vocalist is a help, not a hinderance. There is just so much going on that it is hard to recommend anything, but if pushed i would cite the rhythm section which is busy, busy, busy and Frost's guitar work which is constantly inventive, why the band lost it big time on the next album is one of life's surprises (though it is due for a re-release hopefully!) This is the usual Scandinavian cocktail of jazz/rock and folk with the added bonus of some wonderful and emotive flute on the quieter sections. Even now the nordic countries seem to effortlessly produced good, intresting music and puts our dire music to shame. Wish i could give it more stars, it is that good!

ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL. 26 Feb 2006
By Mark53 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Along with the excellant Burnin' red Ivanhoe and Pan, Midnight Sun were one of the earliest jazz/rock bands from Denmark to be given (fairly) mainstream release (try to find an original gatefold vinyl version of the first Pan-impossible!) and on the whole they are the best. The rhythm section is one of the best if not the best i've ever heard. The drummer in paticular is forever busy and intresting, pushing the solo's along in the best jazz tradition. His playing on 'living on the hill' is mouth dropping brilliant. Well, 'living on the hill' i can't praise it enough. The whole thing is exemplary. The singer, the flute solo and that guitar solo! constitently inventive, stunningly original and constantly breathtaking. It's a long track (almost a whole side) but it feels like it is too short (if you see what i mean?) and even when he goes into a classic heavy rock riff it doesn't deter from it's originality. The shorter tracks on the first side 'talking' has a blistering lead breaks and 'king of the sun' is almost commercial. They made two other albums but the follow up 'walkin' circles' (with another stunning sleeve) was a let down with very few stretched out solo's. This really is an essential purchase if you're in early seventies scandinavian jazz/rock. Even after all these years it is still as brilliant as when i first heard it. Wish they had stayed together.
Excellent classic rock from the 70's 19 Mar 2011
By Helge Krabye - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This album from 71 is a jazz fusion progressive rock inspired masterpiece. Midnight Sun was a Danish group with some of the best Scandinavian musicians around at that time. I remember discovering them late one night when listening to Kid Jensen's Dimensions at Radio Lux. The guitar playing of Peter Frost just blew my mind, and the excellent drumming and bass playing was great! If you love progressive rock and the sound of the 70's, this is for you.
