A good romance, not so good suspense... 27 April 2003
By cmiller - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Charity Sinclair has been drawn to the Yukon ever since she was a young girl. Researching as much as possible on the Klondike Gold Rush, Charity finally takes the leap and buys a cabin on the Yukon. Hiring a seventy-something woman as her guide, Charity embarks on working the land that she has bought, and hopefully finding some gold. What she didn't count on was her not-so-nice neighbor, McCall Hawkings. Someone who likes his privacy, him and Charity defintely get off on the wrong foot when she has repairmen in and out of her cabin making repairs. Even Call's annoyance couldn't stop the desire flowing between the two, and Charity soon finds herself in the middle of an affair that she never wants to end.
Call Hawkings enjoys the quiet of the Yukon. The previous owner of the cabin that Charity bought was an old man who never bothered Call at all. Now, all his new neighbor did was bother him. It has been four years since the auto accident in Lake Tahoe that took the lives of his wife and daughter, and Call is just starting to live again. Now that Charity is in his life it feels like his heart has been jump started, and he knows he doesn't like the feeling. After being celibate for four years, all Call wanted was a sexual relationship with no strings attached. Unfortunatley the only person he wanted wasn't into one night stands.
Martin keeps the sexual tension running high in Midnight Sun. The reader will be fascinated by the description of the rugged country that these two come together in. The suspense was enjoyable, but not enough to keep a suspense lover hooked. The book starts off slow at first with, in my opinion, too much information on the Yukon and gold panning. Martin also includes 'inherited memory' in which Charity gets memories from one of her descendants. She then embarks on the task of finding out which ancestor was on the Yukon in the late 1800's. The reason I gave it four stars is because it didn't hook me like all her other contemporary novels, or even her historicals.
Above all, I would give it a try!

Call came to the Yukon to hide from a painful past but Charity is chipping away at the wall he has built around his heart. Captivating wilderness journey 2 Jun. 2003
By Teri L. Perez - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Charity Sinclair is ready to make some major life changes. Leaving boyfriend Jeremy, and their deteriorating relationship behind, Charity purchases a mining claim in the Canadian Yukon and strikes out to pursue her dream adventure. Leaving her job as editor of action and adventure novels at a large publishing firm behind, the call of the Yukon beckons, and Charity's adventure is about to start.
McCall Hawkins, powerhouse CEO in the software industry, is living in self-imposed exile in the Yukon, unable to cope with the loss of his wife and daughter in a car accident four years ago. In the past several months, he has resumed work on a project he was involved with at the time of the accident, and ever so slowly re-emerging in the tech world. Along comes Charity, disrupting his quiet world by banging away on repairs to her property. Call decides to see what the new neighbor is up to, and is unable from that point on to stay out of her life. They get off to a tumultuous start, but the relationship quickly turns passionate. Unknowingly, the past is once again coming back to haunt Call, and after two attempts on his and Charity's lives, Call has to lay it all on the line to keep Charity safe. Once the dust settles, Charity is forced back to Manhattan, leaving the man she knows she loves beyond all others behind. Call still swears never to love again, but will this journey end here?
This wilderness journey captivates, and makes you wish you were there to experience the sights. The balance of romance outweighs the suspense, but not by much. Secondary characters, Maude and Toby add whit and humor, and even a touch of paranormal is thrown in for good measure. True romantics will savor the ending, along with all the events leading up to it. Another great read from this compelling author!

Kat's Latest Is A Winner! 9 Jun. 2003
By Kristi Ahlers - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
I loved this latest romance from the talented Ms. Martin! Set in a location that is not given much attention, (Yukon, and Alaska), and containing such topic's like the gold rush, inherited memories, and sizzeling romance, and suspense make this a fast paced, page turning read!
McCall Hawkins has come to the Yukon to heal after the death of his wife and child. He has been hiding for four years and really perfers the peace and quite of his mountain hide-a-way. That is all about to change when Charity Sinclair arrives.
Charity has left everything behind in New York in order to realize her dream of going to the Yukon and mining for gold. She isn't doing it to get rich, but more because she has always felt an unusual draw to the mountains. What she doesn't count on is her cranky but sexy as sin nextdoor neighbor, or her attraction to him or his attitude about her arrival. Well, Charity has come to stay, at least for the 6 months that she set for herself and she won't let Call buy her off any sooner then that! Oh, and she plans on mining for gold, so goodbye peace and quite!
Soon she finds herself being rescued by her sexy neighbor from bears, and a nasty neighbor whom works for her in her little mining operation, and as a result they find themselves fighting a loosing battle with the attraction that they feel for each other. Eventually Call learns to love again, and Charity, well, Charity learns a lot about her past, her present, and gold mining, as well as what it feels like to fall in love totally and completely.
This is not a high suspense novel, suspense is involved but not the driving force behind the story. Still love romance between these two very different people was entertaining and fun. Do yourself a favor and get the book, you won't be disappointed!

exciting romantic suspense 17 May 2003
By Harriet Klausner - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Though she loves her two sisters, Charity Sinclair envies what they are doing. Now twenty-eight, she decides if she is going to have an adventure it must be now. Charity gives notice to her employer that she is leaving her senior editor job at Glenbrook Publishing and informs her boyfriend of two years likewise. The Manhattan based editor of renowned thriller novels is relocating for the next six months to the Yukon.
Software CEO Call Hawkins returned to the area he once called home four years ago following the deaths of his wife and daughter in a car accident. He feels guilty that he never was there for his family as he worked sixteen hours everyday. The noise next door upsets the hermit Call who sees Charity moving in. Even more upsetting to Call is that he finds he wants sex for the first time since the tragedy though he only desires it with his new neighbor Charity. As their squabbling relationship turns to love, someone tries to kill her though she knows not why or whom. Call risks his life to keep her safe, but refuses to accept the fact that he loves Charity.
MIDNIGHT SUN is an exciting romantic suspense starring two delightful lead protagonists. The courageous Charity hooks the reader who has thought of doing the same thing she did, while the audience also feels empathy towards Call. Though the attempts on the heroine's life adds suspense and a direct link to the past, it seems unnecessary as the Yukon frontier and the previous deaths of his family provide powerful cover for a deep tale that is superb when the plot adheres to those twin themes.
