For about twenty seconds there, I thought it was the new Rocky theme tune, so Survivor like was the opening riff. Then it transformed itself into classic eighties heavy metal, and there were devil horns getting thrown about all over the room. I nearly had my eye out.

Shadows Mignon is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Henning Pauly, best known for his work with Frameshift, which saw the likes of James LaBrie and Sebastian Bach helping out, as well as his time with Chain alongside Michael Sadler of Saga. Now, after hearing some metal from his youth, he's decided to make his own eighties metal album. And it's a bit of a peach.

With Juan Roos on vocals and Stephen Kernbach recreating the vintage eighties metal keyboard sounds, this is a real treat. Take a listen to 'A Slave To Metal', and you'll find a new anthem for your air guitar experiments, with Roos hitting some Halford style notes.

Henning is happy to acknowledge that some ideas have been borrowed from the metal bands of ye olde days, but even if you have heard some of the words before, nothing will stop those of us of a certain vintage from enjoying tunes like 'All Hail The Warrior, the ten minute epic 'Kingdom Of The Battle Gods', or even getting our lighters in the air for the banjo (!) powered power ballad 'Goodnight Boston'.

There's never a dull moment on this album, and it's been on repeat play around my way for weeks now. Do yourself a favour and dig out those flares and studded wristbands.
