Director Martin Brest rocketed to the top of Hollywood's A list with the blockbuster success of Beverly Hills Cop, and this 1988 follow-up is even better. Midnight Run is a genuine rarity--an action comedy that's dramatically satisfying--thanks to a sharp script by George Gallo, the superb teaming of Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin, and Brest's consummate skill in combining suspense and humour with well-developed characters. De Niro plays a maverick bounty hunter whose latest assignment is Grodin, an accountant accused of embezzling from the Mob. De Niro thinks he's in for an easy job, transporting Grodin (who's afraid to fly) from New York to Los Angeles, but soon discovers that both the FBI and the Mafia are hot on Grodin's trail. Equal parts road trip, action thriller, and a quirky character study, Midnight Run moves at a breakneck pace but still gives De Niro and Grodin time to create rich, memorable performances as two men who seem to be opposites, but gradually develop mutual respect and admiration. Mainstream entertainment at its best. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars An overlooked masterpiece 24 Dec 2004
By Martin
Midnight Run is one of those films that people wrongly badged on its release and ever since then. This gem of a movie ranks amongst De Niro's best films, certainly one of the funniest.
It is an extraordinary roller-coaster ride full of some of the most memorable and funny one-liners on film. The director, Martin Brest (Beverly Hills Cop, Scent of a Woman) assembled a cast that could not have been bettered - from the two leads (Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin) whose on-screen chemistry is a joy to watch, to the hilarious, malevolent mob boss played to perfection by Dennis Farina (who some will know as Lt Mike Torello of the TV series "Crime Story") and to the double-crossing bail bondsman (the excellent Joe Pantoliano from the "Matrix").

De Niro plays the wronged-ex-cop-turned-bounty-hunter, Jack Walsh, who is conned into his "one last job" to bring in the bail-jumping ex accountant (Grodin) of a Chicago mob boss, who has embezzled $15million from his former employer and given it to charity. From one single event on a plane (Grodin's hilarious "fear of flying" act) the whole film grips you by the throat and does not let you go.
The sheer pace of the film keeps you locked in your seat, waiting to see what happens next. The dialogue comes at you like bullets, but unlike most other films of this genre this is a very polished piece of cinema. The comic timing from each of the actors is perfect. The lines aren't just delivered they are snarled, spat out and slapped across the face. The angst, cynicism and sheer exhaustion conveyed to perfection by each of the main characters creates incredible edges to this film.

4.0 out of 5 stars **** TOP NOTCH ACTION COMEDY **** 15 Oct 2002
This is the story of a bounty hunter (De Niro) trying to get to LA with white collar criminal (Grodin) to collect a million dollar bounty. Unfortunately for him though, not only his bounty ann incessant pain in the ass but he's also got the mob, the Feds and another bounty hunter all trying to stop him collecting his pay check.
Midnight Run is a rare gem, a top class action comedy with one of the most unusual screen "buddy" partnerships in cinematic history, which has sadly been somewhat overlooked by the majority of people and that's a great shame because it boasts great characters, great comedy, great action scenes, a wonderful plot and a brilliant script with stand-out performances from Dennis Farina, Charles Grodin and in particular Robert De Niro who proves what a great comedic (as well as character) actor he is.
Expertly directed by Martin Brest, who directed Beverly Hills Cop (and Scent Of A Woman), this is in my opinion a much better movie than the much lauded Eddie Murphy movie and a must see, particularly if you are a fan of Robert De Niro. In fact it is so good I'd give the movie five stars if it weren't for the lack of extras on the DVD but (especially at a budget price) this is definitely one well worth adding to your collection.

I have long been a fan of this movie. It was shamefully overlooked as just another buddy/road movie at the time, but the performances of all involved are truly fantastic.
De Niro works in bailer bonds (I know, American stuff - but not complicated) basically he chases those nasty old criminals who have skipped bail. He is an ex-cop who is fed up and wants out. He is soon granted the opportunity in the form of a $100,000 contract to catch a seemingly harmless accountant who ripped off some Mob guys and, fearing for his life, has disappeared.
The pursuit that follows is hilarious, action packed and Charles Grodin is exceptional as the quiet but still annoyingly-in-your face accountant.
I aint gonna tell you anymore other than get is a whole lot of fun (and the soundtrack is great too).

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 25 April 2008
Midnight Run is an action comedy starring Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin as bounty hunter and bounty respectively. Jack Walsh (De Niro) must deliver ex-Mob accountant Jonathon Mardukis, a.k.a "the Duke", (Grodin) to L.A. bail bondsman Joe Pantoliano on time to collect his $100,000 fee.

It seems like an easy job ("a midnight run") but fate has other plans. De Niro and Grodin end up going cross-country by plane, train and road with action and laughs all the way. With the FBI, bumbling Mobsters (led by the frustrated Dennis Farina) and a rival bounty hunter (John Ashton) all fighting to get their hands on the Duke, there is no let up in the entertainment.

The dialogue, acting and pace all flows so brilliantly. Though not known for his comedy, De Niro excels in the role. The music by Danny Elfman is also top drawer. A great 80s buddy movie that has not aged a bit. An excellent movie that I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius 7 May 2004
I saw this film originally on TV, then decided to buy it.
Midnight Run is possibly one of the funniest films ive ever seen. Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin make the perfect combination. Throughout the film they constantly get at each others throats.
Robert De Niro is a bounty hunter sent on what is seen as an easy pickup. It turns out to be the exact opposite.
Extremely cleverly plotted, extremely well written, Funny as hell, some nice action, and various ways of expressing the word f*** make this an absoloutly brilliant movie!
