This is typical story by Joan Aiken of her fantastical history series. It centres on the joint fortunes of Lucas and Anna-Marie, orphaned heirs of a carpet factory. Braving the industrial horrors of Blastburn, a recurring town in the series, the two battle for survival. They learn many important lessons in looking after Lucas's tutor, Mr Oakapple, working both as match girl and tosh boy, even entering the employment of the carpet factory as a claw-cleaner. Through their adventures, they run afoul of the evil network of Bob Bluddward and eventually defeat him. Blastburn, the background for the story, is a very realistic picture of a grimy working town, and Aiken has obviously researched the period (although fictional, the timeline in The James III series can be linked to the 1800s). This is a good story, with enough twists in the plot to keep the reader interested.

Midnight Is A Place By Joan Aiken is a terribly wonderful book that follows Aiken's Dickens' style of English story telling, adding a twist of fantasy. It is the story of two young children, who are from very different backgrounds, that come together in order to survive after a very tragic event. It is a must read for all Aiken and Childrens English literature fans!!!

Midnight is a Place is a children’s novel from the author of “The Wolves of Willoughby Chase”. Set in the 19th century, the story follows the lonely Lucas Bell, whose guardian owns a carpet factory. The boys’ wishes soon come true when a young girl comes to stay. From here on in it’s a terrifying but superbly realistic ride involving escape, the harsh conditions of the factory, living on the streets and scourging in the sewers.
I really enjoyed this book, although it has a slow beginning, and the only criticism I can find is the lack of a solid theme to the novel as a whole. Recommended to anyone over twelve.
