Less of a follow on from "Nightfall" - more of a continuation and I would recommend reading Nightfall first.

As with the previous book I was not as bowled over as I usually am with the author's works but I suspect he is having a little fun with these and adopting a slightly different style of writing. This is very fast paced with a low level of characterisation and a lightish approach to evil! It avoids true horror with the usual unpleasantness and detail while still dealing with the Devil's minions and humans with very dark hearts.

I think the author wants to have fun and wants you to join him and it just about works - a good lead character (and faithful assistant) and some realism in the way the Police do investigate the way that death seems to follow him around. The weakness is that nothing major is resolved and it is very much like the previous book - I suspect this is the one story told over three books but we will have to wait for the next one to find out.

This is the book following on from Nightfall where Jack finds out who his father was and what happened at his birth.

Jack Nightingale, private investigator, is looking for his sister to stop her from meeting the fate that their father gave them from birth. It is a fast paced good read, that keeps you wanting to know more. This book (and the previous) involves demons and rituals.

Why do the people in his life keeping killing themselves? who is the devil behind that one? when is the killer going to come after Jack? He has saved his sisters soul this time... but is he going to be in time before the next fatality happens?

I have read may genres of books but This series is a mixture of supernatural and detective and its great to combine these it works very well. I thouroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait until the next one... does Jack ever have a love life? Where is his sister now? Can Jack get to her in time? who knows... only time will tell. Bring on another book in this series please..... soon....

A credit to Stephen Leather.

first in the series is... Nightfall buy them both if you have not alreadyyou wont regret it.

I came across the first Jack Nightingale novel by accident and was instantly taken with its originality, mixing an old fashioned gumshoe novel with a dash of Dennis Wheatley and a great dollop of tongue-in-cheek banter from the hero of the tale.

Midnight was even better and works because your disbelief can be utterly suspended given the subject matter. The big question for me is, who is it that keeps warning him that he and his sister are going to hell? Hopefully the third installment will tell me.

I have tried other Stephen Leather books on the strength of these two. They weren't nearly as good simply because he can stretch disbelief to breaking point in his "real world" novels, but it works fine in Nightingale's world.

And if there are any producers out there, this is a tale made for a tv drama series with a script that is more or less ready made.
