5.0 out of 5 stars Turn down the lights and press play! 1 Aug 2001
By Ceri Jenkins VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
After a lenghty self imposed exile, Marvin's comeback album proved that he had lost nothing in his ability to produce classic silky smooth soul music.

This album probably doesn't have the depth of some of his earlier work (eg What's Going On, Lets Get It On, Here My Dear), but despite that it's still a typically great Marvin at work.

This is Marvin in the 80's, and proved to be his last album. It's production was ultimately the catalyst for his demise, as it's promotion required his return to the US and the waiting arms of all the demons he had tried so hard to shake off.

Most people would know and love 'Sexual Healing', but other tracks such as 'Midnight Lady' and 'Turn on Some Music' are also gems.

If you want to set the mood (if you know what I mean), then simply turn down the lights and press play ..................

5.0 out of 5 stars 1982 Studio Album 18 April 2006
Format:Audio CD
The late Marvin Gaye remains one of the most definitive male voices in Soul music. He truly was an utter genius and had such a creative and artistic flair. He remains one of the key influences with todays new generation of wannabe Soul/R&B singers.

In October 1982, Marvin released his first (and his last) studio album for CBS Records, after fleeing from Motown Records in a bid, much like Diana Ross' exact reasons for escaping Motown, for wanting to exert total control over his career, an exercise he was most certainly capable of. The album would be the classic, Midnight Love, which though offered no social commentary or made any sort of profound political statement like much of his previous efforts had, it still stands as a compelling, solid production and a last triumph for the unbeatable legend of soul.

Marvin wrote all 8 songs on the album and also is credited as playing the rolling drum beats, synthesisers and bongos that can eratically be heard throughout each recording. Other highly acclaimed muscians included on the project were Gordon Banks on Guirtars, James Gadson on Drums and Bobby Stern on those neat Harmonica and saxophone interludes. Together they create what amounts too, a pure masterpiece!

The title track, Midnight Love opens the project. Containing multi-layered and complex musical arrangements, the synthesises effect are worked miraculously into a a startling combination of early 80's disco/pop/r&b. The track is a jamming affair with some shrewd vocal trade-offs where Marvin adds his own backing vocals. A nice beginning to the album.

Sexual Healing is perharps one of Marvin Gayes signature tunes. Its a song everyone knows all the words too and has remained refreshingly timeless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who says nothing sexy ever came out of Belgium? 15 Dec 2008
Format:Audio CD
The last studio album by Marvin Gaye recorded in the unlikely location of Ostend, Belgium in 1982 shows that he had lost none of his power to make incomparably smooth, sexy "after dark" soul. There is a nod to his drug habit "Did you save a line for the ladies? We're not into that are you crazy..." on the blistering opener Midnight Lady but you would never guess at his problems on this seamless funky, soulful journey through the thoughts and actions of the number 1 ladies' man. Some songs such as 'Til Tomorrow are slow and seductive and some like Rockin' After Midnight are well rockin'. Jesus even gets a name check on the the very funky My Love Is Waiting and the big hit of the album - Sexual Healing - shows just how strong Marvin's output was towards the end of his life. In fact the whole album is a testament to how great he still was.

The band on this album consisting of Marvin's friends and relatives are a tight unit producing a very funky sound guaranteed to make you move and shake your body.

Listen to Midnight Love along with Gaye's other great lady seducer album Let's Get It On and you will understand why he is held in such high esteem as the music of choice for romantic liaisons the world over.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Great Voice leaves a worthy legacy 27 July 2010
Format:Audio CD
If I was to think of the greatest singer of any Pop Genre I would be hard pressed to instantly say any other name apart from Marvine Gaye.
Not really a big Soul Music fan so called masterpiece's Whats Going On(1971) and mid seventies opus I want You (1976) didnt do for me, obviously Soul is not my native music I would say Rock and Pop is.
Midnight Love was Marvin Gayes last album before his untimely and tragic death. despite the recent drug taking and domestic issues it is one of his most coherent and acesable long players out with the various Greatest Hits packages) His best album since Lets Get it on 1973, however it is a more harder dance oriented piece then the romantic soul bearing of LGO.
The album starts of in a funky direct way with Midnight Love there is the good time Party Vibes of Rocking after Midnight which starts of in a good time bogie kind of way but reaches unexpected Musical hights towards the crescendo. Till Tommorow is Marvin doing his lounge croner bit along with some piercing yet effective falseto(more akin to some of his late seventies stuff)
Turn on some Music is a musicial work out(jam) that sounds like that starts of as silky poke music but builds to a darker final no doubt influenced by some substance. A dark mody number,Third World Girl is a hard raw number where he really bears his soul.
The album ends on a uplifiting note with Joy and My Love is waiting Joy would have been a fiting swan song despite seeing some dark times in his personal life and reflected in his pre ceding albums here Gaye still finds time for optimisum and a greater concern for the world around him and how good the simple things that transcend man made constraints can be.
