Product Description

Book Description

A true story of capture and incarceration; danger and degradation; hope and survival.

Product Description

For Billy Hayes, 1970 was a horrifying year. It was the year when he tried to smuggle 4lbs of hashish from Istanbul back to his home in America. It was the year when he was arrested at Istanbul airport, tried, and sentenced to 30 years in a Turkish jail. For five years he suffered the filth, brutality and degradation of imprisonment in an environment of hellish squalor, while his family fought in vain to secure his release. Finally in desperation, he made a daring escape bid and incredibly the bid succeeded. This is the astounding true story, told in Billy Hayes's own words, of those five years of living hell and of the harrowing ordeal of his time on the run. Vivid and realistic without being morbid, it is a classic story of survival and human endurance, told with humour, intelligence and total honesty.

If you have seen the film and are thinking of reading the book, then go for it. It won't spoil the film for you. The book is slightly different, more powerful than the book in some ways and the ending is different.
If you have not yet seen the film and are about to read the book STOP right now. Watch the film first! Because if you dont you may not like the film as much and that would be a shame!
This amazing story tells the 4 years of Hell Billy Hayes had to endure for trying to smuggle marijuana from Turkey to the USA. The prison of Ankara is the worst place on earth for Billy and his inmates. and when you think it's tough, it gets tougher.
Great story, great reading, a must read if you enjoy gripping true life stories!

A chilling first hand account of the story of Billy Hayes. An American sentenced to a stint in a Turkish prison.
A harrowing story of trial justice and survival. How life can be turned upside down and cast away in just a few hours.

A book you simply can't put down. I was hooked from page one, just dont re-read the back once you've started.
every page keeps you addicted to the enigmatic story with the last line bringing a tear to your eye.

I can't recomend this book highly enough, a brilliant read!

Riveting! Billy Hayes, touring Europe, is made an example of by the Turkish authorities for trying to smuggle out 2 kilos of Hash. His reward? Life imprisonment in a turkish prison!

Very well written, grabbing the readers attention right from the beginning. You will really feel for Mr Hayes and the continual stream of adverse situations he finds himself in, as he tries to keep his head down and plot escape.

Excellent story; I read it in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed it.

great read, couldn't put it down!
Apart from thinking how stupid must a person be to try and smuggle anything in or out of a country, and if you get caught then you have to accept the punishment meted out. Read more

A great read.
Most people are aware of the movie - and after reading the book it's safe to conclude the movie was a pretty accurate portrayal of Billy Haye's story. Read more

still a good tale
a few years old now but still a decent read. just a bit too much self pity in it, he did try to smuggle drugs and knew that it was illegal.
