This was the first Dean Koontz book I read, and it opened my eyes to what modern horror can be like - it doesn't have to be set in creepy graveyards or consist of gore splattered all over the place. In fact 'Midnight' is as much science fiction as horror, though it's Earthbound and set in the present day. The characters are exceedingly well drawn, the plot is compelling and the concept one that really engages. As a writer, Dean Koontz is far above those who churn out pulp fiction. He is a literary writer in the best sense of the word, creating wonderful visual imagery and making his readers feel they are bound up in the storyline. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
