Following the events of Kiss of Crimson (Bk 2), Elise Chase has left the safety of the Darkhaven to seek revenge on the Rogues and Minions whose schemes led to the death of her son. But as the psychic gifts she uses to pursue her vengeance threaten to overwhelm her, it will take the intervention of the Breed warrior Tegan to bring her home.

The Midnight Breed series is finally standing on its own, this is the first book where I didn't feel the shadow of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. It helps that Lara Adrian writes such independent heroines, and also that we change locations, a large chunk of Midnight Awakening takes place in Germany. It places the series in a larger world.

Elise is another strong female character who knows her own mind, she's got a brain and she uses it. This is important, this story just wouldn't work with a heroine who wouldn't stand up to Tegan. There's a scene where Tegan chases Elise off by being his charming self, and she does run away. But, she also stops, thinks and goes back. The progress of Elisa and Tegan's courtship isn't simple, and it shouldn't be. They both have a lot of history and emotional baggage to deal with. It's realistic that it takes them over three quarters of the book to get themselves sorted out. And I think at the end, this gives us the most believable relationship of the series so far.

Although this story is very much focused on Tegan and Elise, and we don't dwell on the previous pairings, there are some moments with characters from the first two books. Tess helping Rio, Gabrielle taking photographs of the daylight world for Lucan - little touches that give us an insight into their relationships. I still find Chase (Sterling) to be the most interesting seconday character and I have to add here, that I KNEW Dante and Chase would end up as friends. :)

If I had any complaints it's that Marek who had such potential to be an outstanding bad guy is reduced to the status of pantomime villain. To me this feels like a wasted opportunity, and is almost too easy. I felt a little like the author thought, 'Oh, I've come up with a better idea, let's just scrap the first one.'

Midnight Awakening acts as a conclusion to the first three books, whilst at the same time the plotline is opened up with a new and more threatening danger awakened. I very much look forward to seeing where this series goes next.

Book 1 - Kiss of Midnight
Book 2 - Kiss of Crimson
Book 4 - Midnight Rising (March 2008)

By Rebecca
Format:Paperback
You've got a race of "vampires" who're descended from some aliens who crashed on earth some centuries ago. Vampires are always male and can only mate with human females called Breedmates, who possess unique psychic talents. The closer in descent a vampire is to the original aliens, the more powerful he is and the more susceptible to sunlight. In addition, vampires always have to resist the temptation of giving in to Bloodlust. Once a vampire succumbs and drinks past a given point, he is lost and becomes an irredeemable and depraved monster called a Rogue.

Elise is a Breedmate who lost her husband 5 years ago and her son last book. She's drawn to Tegan, the coldest member of the Order (the Order is a small group of extremely powerful vampires who fight the Rogues). To avenge her son, she's been killing Rogue servants using her psychic mind-reading abilities. Tegan catches her but pretends not to care. As with so many of these books, he can't get her out of his mind, but when he seeks her out, he treats her really badly, yet she continues developing feelings for him because every once in a while he's really sweet. Eventually, they half team up, reluctantly, which is when the sparks really start flying.

I know Tegan has his issues, but so did Elise. I resented just how much she had to take from him. Still, it was one of the better paranormal novels I've read lately. I liked the plot and the final scenes were pretty creepy. Nice suspense. It's unusual for books of this genre to have such a good flow of events. Usually so much attention is given to the romance that everything else is sort of an arbitrary mush. I like the direction the series is being taken in.

Rio's book is next. I want him to be happy and all, but isn't it a little too soon for him to be finding a new Breedmate? Honestly.

I bought the complete series and loved it. Waiting for the next book to be released. If you are fan of JRWard you are going to love it. All the books have nice plot and every book is referred to the lovestory of another member of the vampire-guardians team. And you are going to love each one of the characters. It's just that if you have already read a series about vampire romance and look for something different you are not going to find it here. I would have loved it more if it had like Larisa Iones plot more mythical creatures and weird stuff.
