Thriller set in Ireland, based on religion and the good/evil struggle. Gabriel (Matthew MacFadyen) plays a preacher who returns to his hometown to find it's become a den of iniquity. His own sister-in-law runs a slummy drinking den that is open on the sabbath, cock fights, street brawls and gambling are nightly occurrences and Gabriel is for none of it. Considering it his personal duty to rid the place of Beelzebub and his handmaidens at once, he starts in on his own family. He soon has neighbour pitted against neighbour and the town in uproar. A dark tale about the pitfalls of fundamentalism and piety.
A young clergyman returns to his family to confront all sorts of unresolved issues and soon finds himself in conflict with the town. I was expecting a thoughtful emotional drama about a man alienated from his roots by his religion. What I got was a rubbish thriller with completely unbelievable plotlines and insane characters. It portrays religion as an excuse for violence and none of the people in it are remotely sympathetic so it's impossible to care what happens to them. It gives the actors no chance to show what they can really do. Very bad indeed.
This is a dark little movie with excellent central performances from Matthew Macfadyen, Daniel Mays and Eva Birthistle.
It is a slow burner and better suited to a TV movie. But it is a very brooding, tense and atmospheric movie worth watching. The story is slight but that adds to the feeling of claustrophobia that permeates the movie.
Macfadyen is outstanding as the fundamentalist priest determined to do the right thing and out of touch with reality and Mays and Birthistle are equally impressive as the family caught up in all.
A dark little drama perfect for cold winter nights.
Watching this film was like waiting for a meal when you are starving and being served up a measly portion of prison slops. The only emotion it stirred in me was anger that I had wasted 80 minutes of my life- voluntarily. Give it a miss.
