3.0 out of 5 stars Unfairly maligned., 24 Aug 2007
By M (St Albans, England, UK) - See all my reviews
Despite receiving a number of positive reviews in the press when it was released, the few user comments about this film on the net are thoroughly negative. However, I am such a big fan of the play that I was determined to see it and was surprised to discover that it wasn't as bad as I had been lead to believe.

Don't misunderstand, the film is no masterpiece and there are many things to criticize. The inexperience of many of the lead actors is obvious and the acting is not exactly of RSC quality. However, despite the unwise modernising of some of the dialogue, enough of the original beauty and power of the play's language remains to rescue the characters from the limitations of the actors portraying them. Also annoying are the long choppy dream sequences and the popping up of Alonzo's ghost at every dramatic moment.

As for the positive qualities, the film is beautifully shot on location in southern Spain and the costumes are impressive for a low budget film. Beatrice-Joanna looks sufficiently like an aristocratic brat who always gets what she wants. Alsemero is decked out as a virile and attractive adventurer, whilst DeFlores is appropriately dark and beetle-like. The style of the film evokes the art-house timelessness of Julie Taymor's 'Titus' and Derek Jarman's 'Edward II', which in my opinion is a good way of making early modern drama both relevant and sufficiently alien.

Whilst the play's subplot is energetically staged in true Ken Russell style (with the bizarre presence of Billy Connolly as Alibius!), its constant intrusion into the main plot soon becomes tiresome. Whilst the relationship between the main and sub plots may be clear to scholars of Jacobean drama it is not clear to the general viewer and, I feel, could be omitted in favour of more dialogue and character development from the main plot (although that would horrify English Literature lecturers).

Ultimately, I'd advise admirers of the play to approach this film expecting a curiosity not a classic. The negative reviewers I suspect expected a masterpiece and were bitterly dissapointed. I expected a disaster and was pleasantly bemused.

1.0 out of 5 stars Truly dire, 17 Feb 2004
By Anduril (London) - See all my reviews

I don't know what they thought they were doing in this 20th century revival of Middleton's 17th century play, but whatever it was, it failed. The acting is dire, the production concept peculiar, and Ian Dury and Billy Connolly both jar. Apart from the occasionally interesting use of lighting and camera angle, this is a film with almost nothing to commend it. I would find something else to do with your time ...

I watched I waited and waited for the plot to get going, but it never did. Paint drying has more enteraiment value. This movie is so high brow that it falls down ones neck!
