Product Description

Product Description

Channeling American roots, country blues, and jazz traditions of the early 20th century, Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three's newest recording is surely a most inspired 21st -century creation. Middle of Everywhere represents the latest addition to a growing eminence in contemporary American roots music, and LaFarge is definitely paving the way. He and his crew don't just pay homage to their artistic forbears here – they commandeer their legacies and create something new—and with Midwestern country blues mashed with Western swing, sweet harmony vocals, and hints of New Orleans style horns and lap steel throughout, the title Middle of Everywhere is particularly fitting. LaFarge's honest, approachable songwriting chops shine through on such tracks as "Head to Toe," and "Ain't the Same," with The South City Three all the while providing an impeccable up-tempo driving rhythm. LaFarge has always had the grace, charm, and flair of the musicians of long ago, but Middle of Everywhere shows just how much of a musical force he is, and how much command he possesses as he steps out with accordant confidence.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful South 24 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Continuing his one man revival of St.Louis Americana of the 1920's and 1930's, Pokey and his gang of three have created another wonderful recording. Their debut album had stronger, more consistent material than this follow up, but the performances are great from all the players, so you don't notice the odd bald patch. That being said, there are many good songs and no obvious duds. My favorites are Drinkin Whiskey Tonight, So Long Honeybee, Head to Toe and Shenandoah River. I saw the band play all these songs live last summer - in addition to the first record's output, and they sounded great live.

This is a great band, and Pokey is an iconoclast like no other. Some say an acquired taste - I say, a tasty good old slice of American pie. Eat up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, brash, raucous uptempo western swing. 24 Feb 2012
By Robert O. Davidson VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Middle of Everywhere is Pokey LaFarge's 4th full-length album. Once again it is a folk / country / bluegrass / dixieland jazz / ragtime / St Louis / Mississippi rooted offering but there is no sense of the band resting on their previous abundant accomplishments. The 3rd album 2010's 'Riverboat Soul', won the 10th Annual Independent Music Award for "Best Americana Album", and they have recently recorded a new 45 rpm single which has been released exclusively on Jack White's label, Third Man Records. This time around though there is slightly more of a New Orleans early jazz feel than before due to the addition of tenor banjo, cornet, trombone and drums to the South City Three's backing.

Though traditional-sounding the songs are in fact all self-penned by Pokey and the recipe is the same as before - i.e. the world inhabited by good-time girls, philandering men and illegal whisky. As usual it is all delivered with customary flair and in the rootsy, bright, brash and raucous upbeat western swing style that we are beginning to recognise as the band's trademark. The rhythms are impeccable and the feel is reminiscent of Jimmie Rodgers (without the yodelling). Rodgers is often referred to as the father of American country/folk music and did arguably more to bring blues to a wider audience than anyone else in the late'20s and early 30s. He was also a huge influence on the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Mississippi John Hurt. In "Cleaning Windows," Van Morrison sings about listening to Rodgers. All of which might give you something of a gut-feeling of where Pokey and the guys are coming from.

Once again an unreserved recommendation.

I really like the album, but I can't play it in any of my CD\DVD players. On every player there is a constant crackle. I also can't return it since I downloaded it via AutoRIP, so save yourself some money and just buy the digital version!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Fun Revival 1 Dec 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Came across this album by accident and very glad I did! A joy from first track to last - would have liked it to have been longer - 41 mins. Great musicianship here: true to style & instrumetation - loved the harmonica here; sweet coronet; ultra melo trombone playing and Louisanna style guitars plus banjo: LaFarge's voice moves these numbers also at a pace, and effortously... great arrangements...authentic and fun! Thoroughly recommend.
