Product Description

CD Description

Channeling American roots, country blues, and jazz traditions of the early 20th century, Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three's newest recording is surely a most inspired 21st -century creation. Middle of Everywhere represents the latest addition to a growing eminence in contemporary American roots music, and LaFarge is definitely paving the way. He and his crew don't just pay homage to their artistic forbears here – they commandeer their legacies and create something new—and with Midwestern country blues mashed with Western swing, sweet harmony vocals, and hints of New Orleans style horns and lap steel throughout, the title Middle of Everywhere is particularly fitting. LaFarge's honest, approachable songwriting chops shine through on such tracks as "Head to Toe," and "Ain't the Same," with The South City Three all the while providing an impeccable up-tempo driving rhythm. LaFarge has always had the grace, charm, and flair of the musicians of long ago, but Middle of Everywhere shows just how much of a musical force he is, and how much command he possesses as he steps out with accordant confidence.

Beautiful South 24 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Continuing his one man revival of St.Louis Americana of the 1920's and 1930's, Pokey and his gang of three have created another wonderful recording. Their debut album had stronger, more consistent material than this follow up, but the performances are great from all the players, so you don't notice the odd bald patch. That being said, there are many good songs and no obvious duds. My favorites are Drinkin Whiskey Tonight, So Long Honeybee, Head to Toe and Shenandoah River. I saw the band play all these songs live last summer - in addition to the first record's output, and they sounded great live.

This is a great band, and Pokey is an iconoclast like no other. Some say an acquired taste - I say, a tasty good old slice of American pie. Eat up.

FIRST HEARD THIS BAND PERFORMING ON JOOLS HOLLAND'S 'HOOTENANNY' BBC-TV SHOW WHICH ENDED 2011, AND I WAS IMMEDIATELY FLOORED BY THEM. FORGET YER LONNIE DONEGANS AND ALL THE OTHER BRITISH COMMERCIAL SO-CALLED SKIFFLE GROUPS OF THE LATE 50s -- THEY WERE AS NEAR MUSIC HALL AS THE TRAD. BOOM THAT FOLLOWED WAS. THIS IS THE NEAREST TO THE AUTHENTIC SOUND CREATED BY THE GATHERINGS THAT APPEARED ON STREET CORNERS IN THE STATES DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION OF THE 2Os/30s... AND I DO MEAN DEPRESSION. THE ONE WE'RE GOING THROUGH AT THE MOMENT IS NOTHING BY COMPARISON WHEN FOLK WERE QUITE LITERALLY STARVING AND OFTEN WITHOUT EVEN A PAIR OF SHOES OR A DECENT RAG TO WEAR -- PROPER HARDSHIP! SO FOLK OF EVERY RACE, CREED AND MUSICAL ABILITY WOULD PICK UP ANYTHING THAT WOULD MAKE A NOISE AND PLAY IT... OLD EMPTY JUGS, METAL WASHBOARDS, BATTERED GUITARS & BANJOS, A HARMONICA PERHAPS... THEY'D MAKE UP LYRICS ABOUT THEIR SITUATION, SING AND ENTERTAIN, THEN PASS THE HAT TO RAKE UP AN HONEST DIME OR TWO WITH WHICH TO BUY A CRUST, SOME LIQUOR PERHAPS, OR TO PAY OFF RENT ARREARS BEFORE THEY WERE PUT OUT ONTO THE STREET. THIS IS THE AUTHENTIC SOUND OF REAL MUSIC -- THE BASIC STUFF RECREATED IN THE 21st. CENTURY WITHOUT AN ELECTRONIC NOISE IN SIGHT! I THOROUGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BAND TO GO PLACES AS QUITE TRULY, THEY'RE ACE! CHECK 'EM OUT!
