About the Author

In 1932 Italian Futurist Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, proposed a revolution in food. Described by Elizabeth David as a 'publication of preposterous new dishes', The Futurist Cookbook is one of the most unusal books on food published during the twentieth century, written as an artistic endeavour, it flirted with Fascist ideals, and challenged all the rules of previous cooking, especially those of Pellegrino Artusi. The Futurist project was advanced with cries of 'Death to Pasta', the abandonment of knives and forks and one of the best artistic jokes of the century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, achievable and classic recipes 17 May 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I can't lie; this book is small and pictureless, but I'd worked that out before I bought it. However, it's a wonderful collection of evocative food memories, background information and straightforward authentic recipes. There are one or two recipes which need obscure ingredients eg konafa pastry, but everything else is easily sourced in a medium sized supermarket.

It's a tiny bit frustrating that there's no index, but the book is divided into sections: mezze, savoury pastry, soups etc with 3-5 recipes in each so it is possible to leaf through to find or not find what you want.

If you're looking for a middle-eastern cookery bible with every dish imaginable, this is not for you. You'll need to buy something expensive. If you are happy with some good writing and approachable recipes to give a flavour of this cuisine then it's well worth the money.

I am enjoying dipping in and out of this book. It has some interesting notes both as a foreword and for the recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem on every page 27 Dec 2012

Claudia Roden is not an instant 'expert 'like your average TV Chef . She has lived in the countries whose cuisine she features and her love of both the cuisine and the ambience show through. The advice is practical and free from 'gastrospeak' that spoils so many cookery books these days
