Review

'Oh dear. I squirmed in recognition at far too much of this book. It's painfully funny.' --Sam Jordison, author of Crap Towns and Bad Dates

Product Description

'My family aren't known for our acting talent, and my elder brother Tom arguably least of all. Unfortunately for him, it was school policy that every child had to take part in the school play in some way and for some inexplicable reason, when the Head of Drama decided to put on 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' one year, he cast Tom as an Oompa Loompa. Months of rehearsals followed, where Tom desperately tried to get to grips with the singing, dancing and general co-ordination that the part required. The opening night finally came and my parents, realising that this was an opportunity that they probably wouldn't get again, had front row seats. On came my brother, painted orange and dressed in a garish outfit complete with striped pop socks. As vaguely anticipated, he was slightly out of time with the dance moves and didn't seem entirely confident of the words, but wasn't doing too badly - until midway through the a song, when he sidestepped too far to the left and fell off the stage into the orchestra pit, destroying a variety of instruments and bringing the entire production to a standstill. My parents left at the interval.' A light-hearted look at life's little 'disasters', Middle Class Nightmares celebrates those memories some would rather forget and will delight anyone who has ever found themselves wishing that the ground would open up and swallow them whole.

This is a book that does exactly what it says on the cover. But, more importantly, it does it in an amusing and well-written fashion. The narrator's own embarrassing experiences are interspersed with vignettes collected apparently from his friends and acquaintances.
Luckily, I have confined my reading to moments of privacy (hence the title of the review), since I have laughed out loud several times, which could be a little embarrassing on public transport. In short, if you are middle class, and enjoy reading about other people's uncomfortable experiences, I can heartily recommend this book.
