Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Strap into the pilot's seat hotshot! The earth is in real danger and you and your buddy are our only chance. Use the Steel Dragon, the latest in fighter technology to blow the robot invasion out of the sky and save us all. We're all counting on you.

Steel Dragon EX puts you at the controls of the most fearsome fighter planes ever devised in both 2D and 3D game modes. This is shoot-em-up action at its best.

Steel Dragon offers the best in classic 2D arcade action. Using a wealth of power ups and weaponry, you must save the earth from a robot invasion headed by incredibly powerful bosses across many varied stages.

Steel Dragon Evolution brings the gameplay into 3D. Choose a character and fighter plane, then take to the skies against a new robotic menace. Skilled play reveals hidden stages and score multipliers, making this a shoot-em-up you'll return to again and again.

What you have here are two vertical-scrolling shoot 'em ups on one blue-disc CD.

"Steel Dragon" (a.k.a. "Shienryu") was a 1997 arcade game, ported to the Sega Saturn under the same name, and the PS1 as "Gekioh" - although the PS1 version included several bonus modes which aren't included here as this is the arcade version. Graphics are colourful, classic bitmap fare. Vertical screen support is included for those mad enough to turn their TV on its side, but there's also a workable compromise in the "command rotation" feature which simply rotates the d-pad directions, allowing you to play the game sideways in vertical mode without getting a crick in your neck.

"Steel Dragon EX" (a.k.a. "Shienryu Explosion") was originally intended as a Dreamcast sequel to "Steel Dragon". Graphics are high-resolution 3D objects instead of bitmaps, but the "2.5D" gameplay is largely the same - just faster and prettier, with a choice of ships and characters.

Two decent shoot 'em ups, one from the PS1 era and one from the Dreamcast era - sounds pretty good for less than a tenner, eh?

Well it WOULD be... Except here's the bad news: this title does not support 60Hz. It's not even a full-screen 50Hz conversion, either - this is badly-bordered 50Hz, with a horribly squashed picture that means anything circular appears as a flattened oval instead.

Please, publishers, stop doing this to PAL gamers. It's not OK, no matter how low the price...

...especially when for the same low price you can get one of the excellent Taito collections instead, each of which contains 4 or 5 scrolling shoot 'em ups every bit as good as (or better than) these, alongside a shed-load of other arcade games of various types, all presented as they should be: in proper full-screen, full-speed 60Hz.

Buyer, you know what to do... :-)

Great Retro Action 8 Feb 2005
By A Customer
I bought this on a whim and was somewhat surprised to find an excellent game inside. Both versions are good to play.
The old Steel dragon initially looks clunky but the more you play the more you grow to love it.
EX is different and a bit faster than the original. Graphics have improved but i find the original more endearing.
IF you liked something like the Metal Slug series then this might appeal to you.
If you didn't it is still a bargain
