5.0 out of 5 stars Wireless range, 10 Nov 2007
By Nick Mooney (Kent, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I'm just writing this review to counter some of the comments on other reviews about range. Some people say it only works from one foot away, needs a fixed line of sight, etc.

My mouse lives on top of the desk. The PC and wireless dongle live in a cupboard underneath with the door closed three feet away. Works perfectly, no line of sight there at all, even in the wrong direction!

Signal strength listed by the MS Mouse application is shown as "good" and the mouse works perfectly under Windows Vista Home Premium.

4.0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Wireless Laser 5000 , 10 Mar 2007
I had wanted a wireless mouse for some time but found that optical ones had a "lag" when dragged. So i came across this and decided to give it a go. Installing this beauty is a breeze and it is so light and smooth to use. I will never go back to using a wired mouse.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice mouse with buggy drivers - and NOT for gaming, 28 Jul 2007
I have been a MS mouse user for well over a decade now. I have been very happy with their products and so looked forward to receiving my new mouse.

The installation was easy. The mouse looked good. The software was very understandable and came with some nice features. The mouse itself felt good in my hand and was both accurate and responsive in use.

However, there are severe drawbacks to this mouse:

First is the version of the Intellipoint software it ships with (6.1 - still the latest version at the time of writing). It has a bug that Microsoft are aware of (and have been for some time) but have been worryingly slow at addressing. It can make the screen flicker in certain applications to the point where the program becomes unusable. Photoshop and Limewire are programs which are commonly affected as are Outlook and Excel to a lesser extent. (A Google search will flag up plenty of examples.) A suggestion as to why this happens is that the software feature which takes little screenshots to allow swapping between programs is constantly taking screenshots and interrupting programs which do not update the screen all the time - even when the feature isn't allocated to a mouse button. I plugged one of my old mice in place of this one and the flicker still existed. I then uninstalled the drivers and put the old version I had in (version 5.2) and the flicker went. However, that old version of the software doesn't have support for this newer mouse.

Second is the delay in the responsiveness of the middle mouse button (the wheel). The wheel is a typical vertical scrolling wheel but is also allows sideways scrolling by tilting the wheel left and right. (I have to say, I rarely need to side scroll in any program.) Apparently, to avoid accidental pressing of the middle button when tilting the wheel, the middle mouse button isn't polled for input as often as other buttons (according to some forums I visited). Whether that explanation is correct or not, the reality for an end user is a fraction of a second delay on the middle mouse click. When using a "work-like" program such as Word or Excel, this delay isn't noticed. However, if you use the middle button for anything in gaming, the delay is crucial. Jumping 0.25 seconds after you have pressed the jump button (I have the button bound to jumping) means many frustrating deaths as you repeatedly fall off pillars into pits of lava because you ran off the edge instead of jumping. Apparently, this delay is a common feature of mice that allow side scrolling. It's awful, not something that can be changed in the setup and not something you could realistically get used to.

Also, as a more minor point, the mousewheel is not a "notched" one. ie, is has a smooth action rather than a clicky one. This tends to mean that if you have the wheel bound to changing weapons (a common setup), it is too easy to scroll past the weapon you are trying to select.

Finally, and this is only a minor complaint, buttons 4 and 5 are a little small and placed a little high on the mouse to be convenient, but that is something I could get used to.

Some of these are pretty serious flaws in a mouse which is trying to be sold as a gaming mouse by MS. In fact, by default the middle mouse button gets bound to a special in-game macro recorder.

So, bottom line, a good, comfortable mouse with good precision but buggy drivers and a number of features that make it virtually useless as a gaming mouse. I've kept my old mouse connected to my machine and my new, shiny mouse is starting to gather dust in the corner of the room.

Approach with caution.
