Nice mouse, shame about the keyboard,
By
This review is from: Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 6000 (Electronics)
I have been using this keyboard/mouse combo for about 6 months now and for the last 3 months I have been looking for a replacement. On the plus side the mouse is fine; it's comfortable and nicely shaped for right-handed users and has a useful selection of controls beyond the standard ones (e.g. zoom, browse fwd/back, etc). What's more they aren't controls that you trigger by accident. However, the mouse really takes second place to the keyboard in a desktop set, and it's the keyboard that let's this package down.First up, yes Microsoft do make good quality keyboards on the whole, and this one has it's good points. Key travel and feel is nice, build quality is solid, and there are all the extra gadget/function keys and programability you'll need. Add to this a pleasant finish for the wrist rest and a variety of adjustments to height & rake and this should be the ideal solution. However, a keyboard with a major annoyance is very frustrating and will soon make you look elsewhere. In the case of the keyboard that comes as part of this set, the main problem (as someone else has pointed out) is the TINY shift key on the left. In the centre it measures just 7mm across and is completely different to the picture on the box and in the marketing photos. The result is that most of the time you end up hitting the back-slash key by mistake followed by the key you wanted to capitalize. For me this was enough to make me decide to change to a keyboard with a decent sized shift key on the left, but if you only ever use the shift key on the right you may be ok. The second problem is with letters not coming out at all. Using the latest Microsoft drivers and with the receiver just one foot away, there are times when letters or even whole words fail to appear. It doesn't seem to be related to battery condition as the problem has ocurred even after putting new batteries in. Perhaps it's just a flakey transmitter in the one I have. If it weren't for the above two problems then I'd have no hesitation in recommending this kit. However, the two things you want from a keyboard are comfort and accuracy, and while it may deliver on the first, the shift key problem and ocassional erratic response mean I'm looking for something else. Both Microsoft and Logitech are releasing new offerings - the Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000 looks interesting, but with an ambidextrous mouse trying to please all potential buyers, it may fall short on comfort. A combination of the new Logitech Wave keyboard together with their MX mouse may ultimately offer a better solution than this package. It's certainly worth trying a keyboard & mouse before you part with your money, and it's worth spending on a decent setup as it'll be money well spent in the long run.

Not so good after a few months.,

I was really impressed with this keyboard and mouse when I first purchased this combination. The feature set was good and I particularly liked the feel and accurracy of the mouse. However keys do get lost somewhere between the keyboard and the receiver - too frequently to be funny and the mouse is already loosing its skin! The rubber type coating is wearing away after 3 months limited use. Actually this set is so poor I've decided to return it. Such a shame as it has so much pontential.

Keyboard drives you insane!!,

Hi ThereI have found quite a few people with the same issue on the Internet but MS doesn't seem to care about it. Basically there are 2 issues with this keyboard. 1. The left "SHIFT" key is so small that it takes some getting used to using it and you seem to constantly hit the CAPS key whilst your finger searches for the tiny key. I have had the keyboard for 4 months now and I still haven't got used to it. 2. More concerning is that the keyboard simply misses key strokes. So when you look back at your email or document every 5th or 6th word or so has a letter missing from it and worse still some of these "Auto correct" to something totally different making your emails a nightmare to check!! I have read something about the drivers not working with some Power DVD drivers but you really shouldn't buy a keyboard and mouse and have to then scour technical forums for help etc. The product is simply not well thought out and poorly launched.
